CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team suffered its first setback of the 2015 campaign Saturday afternoon, Aug. 29, as Xavier University knocked off the Eagles (2-1) in four sets. After trailing 2-0, Eastern took set three from the Musketeers (2-0) but Xavier shut the door in the final frame. XU took the match, 22-25, 31-33, 25-20, 17-25.
Devon Murray's 15 kills marked a career-best for the junior, while Stacey Perinar hit at a .306 percentage with 22 kills. Perinar notched a double-double with 11 digs, while Alyssa Davis led the squad in assists with 27 and picked up a career-high 18 digs. Redshirt freshman Mallory Rajewski recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career with 14 assists and 13 digs, while Corynne Smith continued her stellar defense throughout the weekend, notching 30 digs and a season-high 10 assists. At the net, Cassie Haut led the EMU defense, stuffing the opposition on five occasions, including a pair of solo blocks and three assists.
For the Musketeers, it was Abbey Bessler leading the way with 23 kills and 20 digs, while Mazkenzi Humm and McKena Estes setup the XU offense with 29 and 25 assists, respectively. For the defense, Samantha Foti and Meredith Klare each put together strong efforts with 28 and 27 digs. Lauren Frilling led Xavier defense at the net with six block assists.
The Eagles opened up with their best offensive set, using a strong hitting performance from Perinar. The senior tallied nine of her kills on 22 attempts without making a single error, good for a .409 attack percentage. With just one block from the EMU defense, the Green and White was unable to keep Bessler at bay. She went 10-for-22 in her attack attempts with just three errors. Eastern saw itself on the wrong side of a 25-22 set decision, falling behind 1-0 in their final match of the Queen City Classic.
The second set needed extra points to be decided as Smith and Davis kept the Eagles in the hunt with 24 digs between the two. Smith notched a set-high 13, while Davis added 11 of her own to go along with nine assists. Murray showed up in set two, hitting at a .353 clip with seven kills, while Perinar added six more to her total, however the Musketeer defense was up to the task of EMU's offensive challenge. Xavier recorded five blocks in the frame, as Frilling posted three block assists and Sofia Peterson added a solo stuff and an assists of her own in the 33-31 EMU setback.
Coming out of the break trailing, 2-0, the EMU defense shut down the Musketeers in the third set. Smith led the charge with nine digs in the set, holding Xavier to just 20 points, while Murray led the Eagles to their third frame win, 25-20, by grabbing five kills on eight attempts without an error. Haut posted a solo block and was in on another one of the Green and White's three total in the third set.
Xavier came out swinging in the fourth, and final, set of the match, hitting .357 on its way to a 25-17 set victory. On the other side of the net, Eastern hit just .030 in the frame, making nine errors on 33 attempts in contrast to XU's four errors in 28 swings. Murray and Perinar each grabbed three kills in the set, good for 60 percent of the Eagles offense in the final frame.
EMU completed its first weekend of the season, 2-1, after sweeping Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati Friday, Aug. 28, and falling to Xavier Saturday afternoon. The Green and White will go back to work Friday, Sept. 4, when it heads to Indianapolis, Ind. to take part in the IUPUI Jaguar Tournament. Eastern will open the invitational with West Virginia University Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. inside the IUPUI Gymnasium, commonly known as "The Jungle".
