Kimi Olson led EMU to a 3-0 win in her first match as head coach

CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – First-year Head Volleyball Coach Kimi Olson began her tenure with a sweeping victory as the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team toppled Northern Kentucky University, 3-0, Friday, Aug. 28, to open the 2015 campaign. The Eagles (1-0) took down the Norse (0-1) in their first match of the Queen City Classic, 25-20, 25-21, 33-31.

Stacey Perinar began the season as Eastern's offensive leader, following suit from last season. The Channahon, Ill. native recorded 13 kills, while freshman Cassie Haut was impressive in her intercollegiate debut, posting eight kills on 14 attempts, without an error. Samantha Falco added a career-best six kills in the EMU victory. Senior Alyssa Davis and redshirt freshman Mallory Rajewski split time setting for the Eagles. Davis recorded 18 assists, while Rajewski added 17 in her first time stepping on the hardcourt since her junior year of high school after suffering a pair of season ending injuries. On the defensive side, Corynne Smith continued her stellar career as the EMU libero, posting more than seven digs per set after totaling 23 in the match. In addition, Haut added six block assists, while Kelsey Jones notched five in the season premiere.

As for the Norse, Keely Creamer led the way tallying 18 kills, while Tristen Simpson posted 11 of her own. Taylor Snyder setup the NKU offense, recording 43 assists, while four members of the Northern Kentucky squad recorded 10-or-more digs.

The Eagles opened the match with a 25-20 set win, on the back of Haut's two and Perinar's four kills. Despite recording just nine kills in the opening frame, the Green and White used sound defensive action to keep the Norse off its game. On the defensive end, the Eagles used four total blocks along with 21 digs in the set to keep the NKU offensive on its toes. Eventually, the EMU defense wore out the Norse, forcing them into a .102 attack percentage, leading EMU to a 1-0 lead.

EMU showed up offensively in the second set, making just two errors in 36 attack attempts. Eastern posted a .389 attack percentage, en route to a 25-21 set victory. Haut led the offensive attack with five kills on seven attempts, while Perinar posted four of her own. In addition, Perinar was stout defensively, picking up five digs. Despite the Norse hitting .350 in the set, the Eagles outlasted NKU heading into the break with a 2-0 advantage.

Eastern Michigan closed out the match with an extra points, 33-31, victory in the third set. Despite their meekest offensive output of the match, recording a .098 attack percentage, the Eagles once again used its solid defensive play to keep the Norse at bay. EMU again recorded four team blocks, while Perinar continued her strong offensive play with four kills. Smith was as good as can be following the NKU attack by grabbing 11 digs in the final frame of the match.

Olson and the Eagles continue the Queen City Classic later Friday evening, Aug. 28. EMU will take on Cincinnati at 7 p.m. at Fifth Third Arena.
