The Rockets used three homers to defeat the Eagles in the middle game of the series
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite a second-straight complete game from an EMU senior pitcher, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped an 11-4 decision to the University of Toledo in the middle game of a three-game Mid-American Conference series Friday afternoon, May 15, at Oestrike Stadium. Senior Ryan Lavoie tossed his first career complete game for the Eagles (19-35, 8-18 MAC) in the defeat.
Five different Eagles recorded a pair of hits in the contest as Austin Wilson, Mitchell McGeein, Michael Mioduszewski, Tony DiLeo, and Jackson Martin each picked up two knocks. McGeein, DiLeo, Martin, and David Lett drove in a run for the Green and White. Toledo raced out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on three hits. John Martillotta's RBI single drove in the first run of the contest before a two-run single to center off the bat of Ryan Callahan extended the Rockets lead to three.
The Eagles cut their deficit down to a pair in the bottom of the second as a Martin sacrifice fly to left field in foul territory brought in McGeein for the Green and White's opening run. McGeein led off the frame with a single and moved up to third on an infield single from Mioduszewski and a throwing error from the first baseman on the play.
Callahan's two-run homer to left pushed the Rockets lead to four runs, 5-1, in the top of the third. Following a scoreless fourth, Toledo added a pair of runs on a Callahan sacrifice fly and a Tyler Baar RBI single to take a 7-1 lead in the top of the fifth.
After leading off the sixth inning with a double off the wall in left center, Mioduszewski came around to score on a DiLeo RBI groundout in the ensuing at bat to cut the Rockets lead down to five, 7-2.
EMU answered a Baar two-run homer over the wall in right in the top of the seventh, with a McGeein RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. John Rubino scored on the base hit to left after reaching on a fielder's choice and stealing his 36th base of the season earlier in the frame.
Following the Rockets third two-run blast of the game in the top of the eighth, the Green and White once again responded with a run in the bottom half. Lett drove in DiLeo with an RBI groundout to make the score 11-4.
Neither team could manage any runs in the final frame, as the Rockets held on for the 11-4 win to claim the series victory.
