YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team concluded the 2015 season with a 10-7 victory over the University of Toledo in a Mid-American Conference Senior Day contest Saturday, May 16, at Oestrike Stadium. Prior to the game, the EMU baseball team recognized five seniors for their time and dedication to the program. The 2015 senior class includes: John Rubino, Adam Dennison, Charlie Land, Ryan Lavoie, and Jake Andrews.
Rubino led the Eagles offense in his final game, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, and three stolen bases. The three swipes give the senior 40 on the season which leads all NCAA Division I players. Brennan Williams had a solid day at the plate as well, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Mitchell McGeein drove in four runs while Luke DeVenney scored three times in the final game of the season. AJ Montoya led the Rockets offense with five hits out of the leadoff spot.
Andrews (3-6) picked up the victory on the mound for the Eagles in his final collegiate start. The Chandler, Ariz. native allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out three in six innings pitched. Sophomore Sam Delaplane worked a scoreless final 2.1 innings to pick up his seventh save of the season. Caleb Schillace (3-6) was saddled with the loss for the Rockets, allowing five runs on four hits in just 1.2 innings.
The Eagles answered an early Toledo run with a pair in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 advantage. Jordan Peterson's RBI single to left plated DeVenney for the Green and White's opening run, while a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jackson Martin scored Rubino.
Eastern's offense continued to click in the second inning as the Eagles added three runs to extend their lead to four, 5-1. Rubino's single just under the diving attempt of the third baseman scored Williams who got things started with a walk. Following a Peterson single to load the bases, McGeein drove in DeVenney with an RBI fielder's choice. Michael Mioduszewski then drove an 0-1 pitch into center field in the next at-bat to bring in Rubino.
Another RBI single off the bat of Rubino in the third put the Eagles on the board for the third straight inning and pushed the lead to 6-1. Williams came around to score on the hit after reaching base on a bunt single earlier in the frame.
After a scoreless fourth, the Rockets tacked on another unearned run in the top of the fifth to cut the Eagles lead down to four, 6-2. EMU answered once again, however, in the bottom half on a two-out three-run McGeein triple to left center field to extend the Eagles lead, 9-2.
The Rockets continued to chip away at the Eagles lead, scoring an unearned run in the top of the sixth before adding four more in the seventh to make it a two-run contest, 9-7.
David Lett's suicide squeeze in the bottom of the eighth gave EMU a three-run lead heading to the final inning. Dennison came around to score on the play after walking in his final at-bat for the Green and White.
Delaplane remained on the hill for the Eagles in the ninth to record the final three outs and preserve the 10-7 victory.
The Eagles finished their season with an overall record of 20-35 and a 9-18 MAC record in Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde's first season at the helm. The Green and White set the single game stolen base record during the season and saw Rubino steal a single season record 40 bases in his final campaign.
