Eastern Takes Reigning MAC Champions to the Wire but Fall, 4-3

The Eagles took three singles matches, nearly defeating last season's MAC leaders

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team fell Friday, April 3, to the Miami University RedHawks at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex, 4-3. The Eagles (5-12, 1-3 MAC) dropped the dual match to the reigning Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament champion RedHawks (11-6, 5-0 MAC) despite taking 3-of-6 singles matches.

The match began in doubles play with things looking up for Eastern. The Eagles' No. 1 doubles squad of Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovksa knocked off Ana Rajkovic and Christine Guerrazzi, 6-1, giving the Green and White a 1-0 lead in the doubles portion of the dual. However, Eastern was unable to secure another doubles victory, falling back 1-0 in the overall tally after doubles play.

Supejova again rose to the occasion, putting up a 6-4, 6-1 decision on Alix Thurman at the No. 1 singles spot to even up the match at one apiece. Guerrazzi gave the RedHawks the lead back with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Martinovska at No. 3 before Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna fell to Miami's Ramona Costea, 6-4, 6-2, giving MU a 3-1 lead. The Eagles didn't go away as Ani Gogvadze took down Badinleanu, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, to put the match within reach but Hannah Shteyn closed out the MU victory with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Daphne Friedrichs to complete the contest. Anna Veleva did defeat Rajkovic at No. 5 for the Green and White.

"This was just a great college tennis match," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "It's heartbreaking to not win today, however, each and every player played with the right energy and mentality today. We vastly improved in that area today over past MAC matches. The doubles was very closely contested and turned out to be very critical today, and credit Miami for closing that out when it was even near the end on courts 2 and 3. We need to bring the same energy Sunday against an improved NIU program.  I expect a great match."
