The Green and White defeated NIU Sunday afternoon

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team picked up its second win of Mid-American Conference play Sunday, April 5, as the Eagles (6-12, 2-3 MAC) defeated Northern Illinois University in windy conditions at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex. Eastern dropped the Huskies (11-5, 2-2 MAC), 5-2, on Sunday afternoon.

EMU started the action by winning 2-of-3 doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead early on in the match. The No. 1 doubles duo of Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska picked up the first win of the dual knocking off NIU's Cristina Alvarez and Nelle Youel, 6-1, but the Huskies didn't trail long, as Evelyn Youel and Abigail Dekkinga defeated Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero, 6-4, to knot things up, leaving the fate of the doubles point to the No. 3 doubles matchup. Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna were able to walk away with a 7-5 victory to pickup a 1-0 lead.

In singles action, Gogvadze started things off strong for the Eagles, defeating Alvarez, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles to give the Green and White a 2-0 lead but Nelle Youel took down Supejova, 6-2, 6-3, bringing the Huskies within one. Friedrichs responded for EMU with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to give the Eagles another two-point lead. Barcelo Almoyna secured a victory for EMU by taking down Dekkinga, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 singles, while Martinovska took away the fifth win for Eastern Michigan.

"This was a solid match for us in difficult, windy conditions today," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "This weekend altogether was very good, as we showed we can compete with the best on Friday, and took care of a much improved NIU program today. I credit our ladies with showing good focus and energy all weekend, and if they keep it up, I like how we can finish."

The Eagles return to the court Friday, April 10, when they head south to square off with the University of Toledo Rockets. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
