Olmos' homer in the top of the seventh gave the Eagles the go-ahead run
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team snapped a three-game losing streak and earned its first Mid-American Conference win with a 4-3 victory over the University of Akron Friday, April 3.
Game two of the doubleheader was cancelled due to rain and will not be rescheduled per league rules
The Eagles (9-19, 1-2) out-hit Akron 9-6 with both Abi Clark and Michelle Kriegshauser notching two hits for the Green and White, while Brandice Olmos, Taylor Wagner and Katy Wyman drove in a run apiece. In the circle, Lindsay Rich pitched five complete innings with two strikeouts, while Alyssa Huntley nabbed her first victory over the 2015 season, tossing two innings for the Green and White.
For Akron (12-16, 0-3), Chelsea Wildley went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Taryn Allmon drove in two runs. Junior Erin Seiler threw all seven innings for the Zips, giving up nine hits and four earned runs, while striking out 14 of the 30 batters she faced.
After a slow start in its last game, the Eagles got their offense going early against the Zips when Jenn Lucas singled to left center in the top of the first inning and advanced to third on a Kriegshauser single to the opposite field. A ball to the backstop gave Lucas the chance to steal home and give EMU the early 1-0 advantage over Akron.
The Green and White tacked on a second run in the top of the third when it started a rally using three-straight two-out singles from the heart of the order. EMU extended its lead to 3-0 when Wagner laced a single through the infield, allowing Clark to touch home.
After holding the Zips scoreless for five innings, Akron used three hits in the bottom of the sixth to score three runs and knot the score at 3-3. Rich gave up back-to-back hits, including a leadoff triple that would score on a single down the left field line to light up the scoreboard for the first time in the game for UA. With a runner on first base, Huntley came on in relief of Rich, striking out the first batter she faced. Following the out, Allmon launched a two-run homer over the left center wall to knot the score at 3-3 before the final two outs of the inning were recorded.
Akron used a strikeout to start the final at-bat for the Green and White, but pinch hitter Olmos dug in and ripped a homerun over the left center fence which would allow EMU to take the narrow 4-3 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
Huntley and the rest of the Eagle defense retired the Zips in order in the bottom half of the inning to record their first conference victory of the 2015 season.
The Eagles will be back in action Saturday, April 4 when it takes on Ohio University at 4 p.m. in Athens.
