The Eagles are in their second-straight MAC semifinal match

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Heading into the 2015 Mid-American Conference Tennis Championships as the No. 4 seed, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team won its first round dual match against  the No. 5 seed University of Toledo Friday, April 24. The Eagles dropped the doubles point before taking 4-of-6 matches in singles action to defeat the Rockets, 4-3, for the second time this season.

Doubles play began with the Eagles taking a quick 6-3 decision at the No. 2 position as All-MAC Second Team award recipient Ani Gogvadze and her teammate, Maria Paula Ribero, dispatched Emily Mazzola and Lexy Pitt. The Rockets came back swinging however, as EMU's No. 3 duo of Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna dropped a 6-3 decision to Sidnay Huck and Mackenzie Bowman, before Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska fell 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. With Toledo taking a 1-0 lead, the Eagles set their sights on singles play.

Supejova set the tone in singles play for EMU. The three-time All-MAC First Team award winner blanked Pitt in two sets, 6-0, 6-0, to knot up the match at 1-1. The No. 6 singles match was next to finish as Lauren Thai put the Rockets back on with a two-set win over Almoyna, 6-4, 6-4. Gogvadze found herself on the wrong end of the No. 2 match giving Toledo a 3-1 lead, leaving the Eagles in a deep hole to climb out of. However, EMU was up to the challenge. The Green and White rattled off three wins in a row as Anna Veleva took down Bowman, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-1, before Martinovska defeated Huck in a three-setter as well. With the match on the line, Friedrichs took Mazzola to three sets, winning the final frame, 7-5, to seal the Eagles spot in the semifinal round.

"This was a great fight by both teams," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We did a good job of getting quick leads in the third sets, but Toledo responded. It took some moxie to close out three matches in the end but we got the job done. We will need to bring our best against Miami tomorrow."

Eastern will square off with the No. 1 seed Miami University Saturday, April 25, at the Hepburn Tennix Complex in Oxford, Ohio. Earlier this season, the RedHawks squeaked by EMU with a 4-3 victory, April 3. The semifinal contest will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
