OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team saw the 2015 season come to a close in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Championships, falling to No. 1-seeded Miami University, 4-1, Saturday, April 25.
In doubles play, the No. 1 doubles team of freshman Andrea Martinovska and junior Klara Supejova grabbed the first point of the match for EMU with a shut out victory over Miami's Christine Guerrazzi and Nelli Ponomareva, 6-0. The RedHawks roared back to take the next two doubles matches as the No. 2 doubles team of Ani Gogvadze and Anna Veleva dropped a 6-4 decision and No. 3 Alejandra Barcelo and Daphne Friedrichs fell in a 6-1 match to Andreea Badileanu and Romona Castea, allowing Miami to take the doubles point.
Singles play was suspended early as the Eagles managed just one victory from Supejova at No. 1 singles. The junior First Team All-MAC honoree took down Alix Thurman in three matches, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Badileanu nabbed the two-set decision over Gogvadze at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, while Veleva took the No. 5 Miami singles opponent to three sets, but was unable to pull off a second win, putting the Eagles down 3-1. The RedHawks captured the final win they needed to secure the semifinal victory at No. 6 singles when Costea defeated Barcelo, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). The No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches were suspended as Miami went on to the 4-1 win over the Green and White.
"I'm proud of the effort given by the team today," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We had an even match going until the end. We will miss our senior Daphne very much but this is a young team that will grow. The future looks good for us."
The Eagles capped off the 2015 season 9-14 overall and 4-4 in conference action.
