The redshirt-junior place fifth overall in the 197 lbs. to punch his first ever ticket to the NCAA Championships
COLUMBIA, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team concluded the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships Sunday, March 8.
Eastern secured just four points on the final day of the tournament, placing eighth overall with 28.5 points, while No. 1 the University of Missouri took the title for the third-straight season with 139.5 points. The Tigers dominated the field with five individual champions, while No. 22 Old Dominion placed second with 97.5 team points.
Despite falling in a 2-1 tiebreaker in his first bout of the day, redshirt-junior Anthony Abro came back strong in the fifth-place match. The Canton, Mich. native took a 1-1 tie into the sudden victory round before notching the takedown he needed to take a 3-1 decision over Basil Minto of Northern Iowa. The fifth-place finish secured Abro his first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament and made him the lone automatic qualifier for the Eagles.
Starting off the afternoon in the consolation bracket, redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto fell to Mackenzie McGuire of Kent State in a 10-3 decision to send him to the fifth-place match. After an injury in his earlier bout, Pizzuto was unable to compete in the fifth-place match, having to take a medical forfeit to close out the championships.
Reshirt-junior Michael Shaw battled in his first bout of the afternoon but came just shy of a win, falling in a 4-2 decision to Jake Hodges of Northern Iowa before suffering the loss to Tyler Small of Kent State in the fifth-place bout to take sixth overall at 141 lbs.
Michael Depalma of Kent State came out hard to start the second period of action, pinning Nicholas Barber in 3:21 to send him into the fifth-place match. Needing a win to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships, Barber took the match into a tiebreaker before falling in a 6-5 decision to place sixth overall.
In his final MAC Championship appearance, redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip dropped his first match of the afternoon to Spartak Chino of Ohio in a 12-7 tiebreaker to send him into the fifth-place match. Zeerip battled with Jarrett Jenson of Northern Iowa in the final match to come away with a narrow 5-4 victory and earn a fifth-place finish for the Green and White.
Abro will head to the NCAA Championships, which take place March 19-21 in St. Louis, Mo., while the other top-seeded Eagles will hope to earn at-large bids into the tournament.
