The redshirt-junior nabbed a victory in the first round of the championships

ST LOUIS, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) – Redshirt-junior Anthony Abro is the lone Easterm Michigan University wrestler to remain alive after day one of the 2015 NCAA Championships after securing a victory over Phil Wellington of Ohio Thursday, March 19, while redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip closed out his career as an Eagle with two losses on day one.

Looking to avenge an earlier loss, Abro held Ohio's Phil Wellington scoreless in the first period. Wellington chose down to start the second to nab a quick escape and score the only points of the second before Abro chose down to start the final two minutes of action. Abro responded with an escape of his own to start the third period with 1:30 remaining in the opening bout of the 197 lb. weight class. With the score knotted at 1-1, Abro headed into his second overtime match of the year before nearly grabbing a counter with 30 seconds left.  Neither opponent was able to get a point in the overtime period, sending the match into rideouts where Abro got out in a mere 17 seconds and Wellington escaped in six. With the score tied at 2-2 the conference opponents headed into their second overtime, while Abro notched a takedown with 15 seconds left to grab his first victory of the NCAA Championships.

In his second bout of the day, Abro trailed 2-1 heading into the second period against No. 3 Kyven Gadson, but it was Gadson who would have the upperhand in the second, pinning Abro in 4:55 to send the redshirt-junior into the consolation bracket.

In the opening round of the tournament, No. 3 Dylan Ness took the early 2-0 lead over Zeerip with a takedown midway through the first before extending his lead to 5-1 to close out the second period of action. Ness continued to work Zeerip in the final period, earning an 11-2 major decision to send the Fremont, Mich. native to the consolation bracket at 157 lbs.

After fighting back to tie knot the score at 6-6 in the final period of the 157 lb. consolation bracket, Zeerip forced the match into overtime after neither him nor Gregory Flournoy of George Mason were able to notch a takedown in the sudden victory period. In the final second of the overtime period, Flournoy nabbed the back points he needed in order to take a 9-6 win over Zeerip.

Zeerip closes out his two-year career as an Eagle, posting two 20-win seasons for the Gren and White and earning two at-large bids to the national tournament.

Abro will be back in action Friday, March 20 for consolation round action.
