Abro Finishes in the Top 16 at NCAA Championships

The redshirt-junior fell in his fourth bout of the NCAA Championships
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) – Redshirt-junior Anthony Abro had an impressive showing on day two of the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships for the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team, making it to the round of 16 before bowing out to Timmy McCall of Wisconsin Friday, March 20.
In his first match in the consolation bracket, Abro took the first lead using a takedown with 53 seconds remaining in the first period. Jared Haught of Virginia Tech nabbed an easy escape point, but it was Abro who came up with the big lift to earn his second takedown and extend his lead to 4-1 to close out the first period. Starting on bottom to begin the second, the Canton, Mich. native grabbed the easy escape point, but this time Haught responded with a takedown of his own.
Abro grabbed one final escape point in the second period to take a two-point lead, 6-4 into the final minutes of action. As time was winding down, Haught notched a takedown with 13 seconds on the clock to tie the score at 8-8 before Abro punched his ticket to the final 16 with one final escape point to take a 9-8 decision.
In his second bout of the day, Abro headed into the second period trailing 2-1 before he tied it up in the second with an escape to start the period. McCall came out strong in the final period of action, earning a takedown and a near fall to take the 8-2 victory from Abro.
Abro capped off his 2014-15 season with a 28-15 overall record, highlighting the 197 lb. weight class for the Green and White.
