The Eagles defeated UIC, 4-3, before taking down Oakland, 6-1

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team swept a doubleheader Saturday, March 7, by defeating the University of Illinois-Chicago and Oakland University at the Chippewa Racquet Club. The Eagles (4-9) knocked off UIC, 4-3, before defeating the Golden Grizzlies, 6-1.

EMU first took down Illinois-Chicago in the 1 p.m. match. The Eagles swept doubles play versus the Flames. First Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova took a 6-1 decision against Oana Manole and Keti Mebuke at No. 1, while Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna and Daphne Friedrichs 6-2 victory wrapped up the doubles point for the Green and White giving them a 1-0 lead heading into doubles play.

In singles play, the Eagles won a trio of matches, coming down to the final decision. Maria Paula Ribero gave the Green and White a 2-0 lead after a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5, but UIC return-fired with a victory of their own as Jackie Altansarnai knocked off Gogvadze, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. The Flames tied it up after a No. 6 win for the Flames. Friedrichs gave the Eagles the lead again with a two set, 6-3, 7-5 win in the No. 3 spot, but Supejova secured the victory with a 7-5, 7-6 over Mebuke at No. 1.

The Eagles moved on to Oakland in the evening and came away victories. Eastern swept in doubles action. Gogvadze and Ribero won at No. 2, defeating Karine Celis and Juliana Guevara, 6-1, while Friedrichs and Barcelo took down Theresa Elder and Cam Sabourin, 6-2. Finally, Martinovska and Supejova won the No. 1 doubles match, 6-3.

Eastern continued to dominate, winning the No. 1 through No. 5 singles matches. Martinovska first came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Camille Hemond-Hill, before a 6-2, 6-0 decision for Supejova against Sabourin. Sharma took down Elder, 6-1, 6-3, while Friedrichs and Gogvadze took away two-set victories. The only EMU loss was when Veleva retired during the first set of a 5-4 score.

"Both matches are doubles was very solid today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Our singles play wasn't the best in the first match, but getting the win is the most important.  We have two weeks to get ready for conference play, and we will be ready for some battles over the next six weeks."

The Eagles return to the court Friday, March 20, when they travel to Akron, Ohio to take on the University of Akron Zips. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in the Rubber City.
