Five EMU Wrestlers Advance After Day One of the MAC Championships

The Eagles sit in seventh with 24.5 points after day one of the championships
COLUMBIA, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team earned 24.5 points on day one of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by No. 1 University of Missouri Saturday, March 7.
The Eagles currently sit in seventh overall, while host Missouri leads the field with 122 points and No. 22 Old Dominion is in second, trailing the Tigers by 45.5 points with 76.5 points on day one.
Five EMU grapplers produced 1-1 records on day one of the championships and will continue to compete in the wrestleback bracket on day two of the tournament. Redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto nabbed a win in his first bout of the tournament with a 17-8 major decision over Leighton Daul of Northern Illinois before falling into the wrestleback bracket in the quarterfinals with a loss to Tyler Keselring of Central Michigan in an 8-3 decision.
In the 141 lb. weight class, Michael Shaw dropped his first match of the day to No. 5 Lavion Mayes of Missouri, 8-1. The redshirt-junior came back in the consolation bracket to avenge his loss earlier this season to Tyler Argue of Northern Illinois with a 10-3 decision to stay alive for day two of the tournament.
Moving into the 149 lb. weight class, Nicholas Barber was unable to upend No. 10 Tywan Claxton of Ohio who earned a 10-2 major decision. The Cleveland, Ohio native earned his first victory of the championships in his second round of the day when he shut out Austin Culton of Northern Illinois, 6-0.
The Green and White saw another 1-1 day from redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip at 157 lbs. The Fremont, Mich. native also got revenge from an earlier season loss, picking up a 5-3 victory over Cody LeCount of Central Michigan in his first bout of the day. The redshirt-senior could not manage a win in his second match, falling in a 13-5 decision to No. 5 Ian Miller of Kent State.
EMU's saw one final grappler make it to day two of the championships when redshirt-junior Anthony Abro garnered a narrow 8-7 decision over Cole Baxter of Kent State at 197 lbs. in the wrestleback bracket. The Canton, Mich. native fell to the consolation bracket after suffering a loss to Kevin Beazley in his opening bout.
Five Eagles concluded the 2014-15 campaign as they were unable to capture victories on opening day of the MAC Championships. Senior Mike Curby closed out his EMU career after highlighting the 184 lb. weight class all year for the Green and White, posting a 42-91 all-time record for Eastern Michigan.
EMU will conclude the 2015 MAC Championship Sunday, March 8.
