Baseball Drops Midweek Contest at Indiana, 9-1

3/11/2015 7:23:00 PM | Baseball

EMU dropped both games of the midweek series against the Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a second straight decision to Indiana University, March 11, at Bart Kaufman Field.  Indiana (10-4) jumped on the Green and White early and cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Eagles (6-12) in the final game of the midweek two-game set.

The Eagles posted seven hits in the contest, with Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) and Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) each recording a pair of hits apiece.  John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) did not start the game, but finished 1-for-3 while knocking in the lone EMU run.  Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) each had a hit in the game as well.  The Hoosiers scored nine runs on 10 hits.  Brad Hartong and Brian Wilhite each knocked in three runs, while Casey Rodrigue filled up the stat sheet with two hits, three runs, two RBI, and a stolen base for Indiana.

Freshman Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz.-Perry) got the start for the Green and White, going two innings and giving up four runs on three hits.  Huckaby (0-1) took the loss on the hill in his second career start.  Evan Bell recorded the win in relief for the Hoosiers.  Bell (1-1) pitched four innings, giving up one run on four hits and struck out two.

The Hoosiers jumped on the board early with a first inning run to take a 1-0 lead.  IU's Brian Wilhite belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to extend the Indiana lead out to 4-0.

EMU threatened to cut into its deficit after loading the bases in the top of the third inning but could not push a run across.  Following a one-out walk to Williams, Peterson and McGeein had consecutive base hits to load the bases up for the Green and White.  Indiana reliever, Evan Bell was able to get Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) and Adam Dennison (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Padua Franciscan) out to end the threat and keep the Eagles off the board.

Indiana pushed another two runs across in the fifth inning on a two-run single off the bat of Brad Hartong to grab a 6-1 advantage.

Eastern cracked the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Indiana lead down to 6-1 on a two-out RBI single from Montgomery.  McGeein led off the frame with a ground-rule double and scattered home when Montgomery was able to beat the IU shift with a run-scoring single.

IU responded, however, with its second homer of the contest.  Rodrigue hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning to extend the Hoosiers lead out to 8-1.  Freshman Laren Eustace's RBI double in the eighth gave Indiana a 9-1 lead.

EMU could only manage a pinch-hit single from DeVenney in the ninth inning, as the Hoosiers recorded their seventh consecutive victory and second straight win over the Eagles by a final tally of 9-1.

Eastern Michigan's three-game series against Northern Kentucky University originally scheduled for this weekend, March 13-15, has been cancelled due to unplayable field conditions.  EMU is currently looking for replacement games for this weekend.  Stay tuned to EMUEagles.com for any and all updates regarding Eastern Michigan University baseball.
