EMU scored three runs in the eighth inning, but IU held on for the 5-3 victory
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team's comeback attempt fell short against Indiana University Tuesday, March 10. The Eagles scored three runs in the eighth inning, but it was not enough as the Hoosiers held on for a 5-3 victory. The win was the sixth-straight for the Hoosiers who improve to 9-4 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 6-11.
The Green and White scored three runs on eight hits, with Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) and Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) leading the way with two hits apiece. Mioduszewski recorded a pair of RBI's, both coming on his eighth inning home run. Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) added the other RBI for Eastern. Indiana had 10 hits in the contest, including a pair of multi-hit performances from Brad Hartong and Isaiah Pasteur.
Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) was saddled with the loss in his second career start. Mattson (0-1) went five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three. Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) worked a scoreless 1.1 innings with a pair of punch outs for Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde out of the bullpen. Brian Hobbie recorded the victory in his first career start for IU. Hobbie (1-0) allowed only one hit in seven innings, and struck out seven. Luke Harrison was credited with his third save for the Hoosiers, working the final 1.2 innings.
Indiana cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 2-0 advantage. A pair of walks and wild pitches put runners on first and third with one out. The Hoosiers scored the first run of the contest on a Will Nolden RBI groundout and then tacked on the second after an RBI double off the bat of Pasteur.
Two-time All-Big Ten First Team selection Scott Donley pushed the Hoosiers lead out to 3-0 after belting his first home run of the season in the bottom of the third. IU scored solo runs in the fourth and seventh innings to take a 5-0 lead heading to the eighth.
Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) led off the top of the eighth inning with a sharp single into left field to get things going for the Green and White. Following a Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) strikeout, Mioduszewski sent a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall for his first homer of the season which brought the Eagles to within three, 5-2. After the long ball first-year Head Coach Chris Lemonis went to the bullpen, but Williams kept the rally going with another single to left. DiLeo made it back-to-back hits with an RBI double into the right center field gap to score Williams and bring the Eagles' deficit down to two, 5-3. Luke Harrison then settled in, however, and struck out Danny Kerr (Macomb, Mich.-L'Anse Creuse North) and David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) to end the three-run inning for EMU.
The Eagles were unable to get anything going in the ninth inning off of Harrison and IU hung on for the two-run victory in front of 1,578 fans in the 2015 season-opener at Bart Kaufman Field.
Eastern Michigan and Indiana conclude the brief two-game set tomorrow, March 11, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
