Longtime SID Jim Streeter Honored By EMU Athletics

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University honored longtime former employee and nationally-recognized sports information director Jim Streeter with the unveiling of the Jim Streeter Media Relations Office last Friday night, March 6. Streeter was also awarded an honorary EMU varsity letter for his contributions.

"Jim Streeter essentially defined athletic media relations at Eastern Michigan University," said Heather Lyke, EMU Vice President and Director of Athletics. "It is only fitting that this office, so integral to our athletics operations, be named for the man who was – and remains – an integral part of our EMU athletics family."

Over 100 friends, family members, coworkers, and former student-athletes attended the unveiling, held prior to the men's basketball game versus the Toledo Rockets, including several members Toledo's media relations team, a testament to Streeter's reputation across the Mid-American Conference.

"As the sports information director, Jim Streeter made an indelible mark at EMU," said Greg Steiner, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations. "I would not be in the position I am today if it was not for Jim and I am personally grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to work with him. Our office has produced numerous individuals who started as students, graduate assistants or interns and walk out our doors into some great jobs around the country thanks due in large part to his leadership and guidance."

"I appreciate everyone here; everyone who worked with me and for me," Streeter said, addressing the attendees. "[Working for EMU] was definitely a family situation."

"Streets" – as he was known to students and coworkers - graduated from EMU in 1973 with a degree in physical education and minors in journalism and history. His passion for athletics and interest in journalism led him to the Eastern Echo, where he served as sports editor for two years. After graduating, he joined the Ypsilanti Press as a sports writer before returning to EMU as assistant sports information director in 1974. He was named Sports Information Director in 1975, overseeing publicity for 21 varsity sports, as well as playing a key role in the development and maintenance of the athletics department's archives. He was inducted into the University's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

Streeter was a member of the College of Sports Information Directors Of America (CoSIDA) and served on the publications committee for four years. He was the secretary of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters and Writers Association from 1990-94 after serving as vice president for one year, and was honored with the organization's "Best of the Best" award in 2007. He was one of nine media marshals selected for the 2004 Ryder Cup golf competition at Oakland Hills Country Club and was part of the media relations staff at the 2008 NCAA men's basketball regional and the 2009 Final Four in Detroit.

The Jim Streeter Media Relations Office dedication was made possible by private donations to the James L. Streeter Media Center Fund, administered by the EMU Foundation. Additional contributions to this fund will be put toward technology and other upgrades to further the publicity efforts of Eastern Michigan Athletics.
