Michael Mioduszewski delivered a three-run triple in the ninth inning but it was not enough as SCU held on for its fifth consecutive victory
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to Santa Clara University Saturday, Feb. 28, at Stephen Schott Stadium. The Broncos (6-3) took a 5-0 lead into the ninth and held on to win their fifth-straight game. EMU (3-8) was held scoreless until Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) drilled a pinch hit three-run triple in the final inning.
Charlie Land (Wheat Ridge, Colo.-Wheat Ridge (Mesa C.C.)) was solid in his third start of the season, but took the loss for the Eagles. Land (0-2) tossed a career-high six innings, while allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out three. Steven Wilson (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season for the Broncos. Wilson threw seven scoreless innings, giving up five hits and striking out eight. Reece Karalus recorded his third save of the season, getting the final two outs of the game via the strikeout.
EMU collected eight hits in the contest, with Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.) leading the way with two hits. Peterson now has five multi-hit games in his first season with the Green and White. Freshman Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) picked up his third hit of the series going 1-for-4 in game two of the four-game set. Williams recorded his first collegiate double in the third inning. Mioduszewski knocked in all three runs for the Eagles with his three-run triple in the top of the ninth.
The Broncos used small ball to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Evan Haberle led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by TC Florentine. Florentine reached first on the play because of an error by Land. Austin Fisher then executed another sacrifice bunt attempt to move Haberle and Florentine up to second and third with one out. SCU finally cracked the scoreboard with a suicide squeeze from Grant Meylan to plate Haberle and take a 1-0 lead. Land ended the threat by getting Kyle Cortopassi to bounce into the 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
SCU tacked on four more runs in the seventh to extend its lead out to 5-0. A single and walk to begin the inning ended the night for Land. Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde brought in senior lefty Michael Marsinek (Streetboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit), but he could only get a pair of outs before Van Ameyde had to bring in Devon Bronson (Southgate, Mich.-Anderson) to finish the frame. The Broncos plated four runs on two hits and took advantage of two Eagle errors in the inning.
The Eagles' offense tried to mount a comeback in their final at-bats but came up a pair of runs short. Adam Dennison got the rally started with a one-out walk. Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) then reached on an error by the third baseman. Coach Van Ameyde sent up pinch hitter, Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) to keep the rally going and the freshman delivered with a single to load the bases for Mioduszewski. The redshirt-sophomore laced a 2-1 pitch into the right center field gap for a bases clearing triple to make the score 5-3. The Broncos then went to the bullpen and called upon closer, Reece Karalus. The 6-3 righty was able to strikeout John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) and Williams to preserve the two-run victory for SCU.
Eastern Michigan and Santa Clara will conclude the four-game series tomorrow, March 1, with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 p.m. PT at Stephen Schott Stadium. The nightcap will be a seven-inning contest, set to begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Live video and statistics will be available for both games on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
