Lee's 33 points were a season-high and fell just five points shy of his career-best
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Despite Raven Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) scoring 33 points, which was the first time a member of the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team has surpassed 30 points since Lee scored 38 versus UT Arlington, Nov. 23, 2013, the Eagles (14-9, 3-7 MAC) could not withstand Ohio University's hot shooting. The Bobcats (9-12, 4-6 MAC) knocked off EMU, 76-73, at the OU Convocation Center Saturday, Feb. 7.
Lee was the top-scorer in the game with his 33, scoring all but two in the second half. The Detroit, Mich. native shot 10-of-20 from the floor, while knocking down 5-of-10 from long distance. It was the first time an Eagle had converted on 10 field goals since Karrington Ward (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township (Moraine Valley C.C.)) hit 10 versus Coppin State, Dec. 23, 2013. Jodan Price (Indianapolis, Ind.-Detroit Country Day (DePaul)) added 12 points, while Mike Talley (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale ABT (Duquesne)) scored eight points while dishing out five assists without a turnover. As a team, the Eagles shot 39.7 percent from the floor, going 23-of-58.
For Ohio, Javarez Willis led the way, scoring 22 points while hitting 6-of-15 three-point field goal attempts. In addition, Antonio Campbell scored 11 points to go along with 12 rebounds, while Maurice Ndour notched 16 and nine, respectively. The Bobcats shot 47.1 percent from the floor, while hitting 20-of-25 free throw attempts.
The Eagles began the game on a 10-2 run coming off of a pair of layups and a pair of three-balls, holding Ohio to just 1-of-11 to open the contest. The Bobcats returned with four-straight points to make it a 10-6 game in favor of EMU with just under 14 minutes to go in the first half. Eastern Michigan was able to extend its lead to as many as seven, before Ohio went on an eight-point run to give it its first lead, 15-14, with seven minutes remaining in the game.
The Bobcats continued their run, outscoring EMU, 16-4, over a six minute span to give them a 10-point, 28-18, lead with just under three minutes left in the half. Ohio closed out the half by knocking down six of their last seven shots, including a trio of three-point buckets to give the Bobcats a 33-24 lead at the break.
Eastern Michigan had eight student-athletes score points in the first half with Anali Okoloji (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Impact Academy (George Mason)) leading the pack, scoring five points, while Talley and Brandon Nazione (Howell, Mich.-Howell (Des Moines Area C.C.)) each contributed four points. Nazione also led the Eagles with four rebounds, while the Eagles shot just 34.5 percent from the floor, while the Bobcats shot 40 percent from the floor with Willis posting 13 points and Campbell pulling down nine rebounds.
The beginning of second half was promising for the Eagles. Eastern used a 14-6 run at the start of the half to bring EMU within one point, 39-38, with 16:48 on the clock. Price was the go to guy during that stretch, posting nine points on a pair of triples and three free throws. Ohio didn't sit back and take it as the Bobcats went on a run of their own, scoring 14 of the next 16 points in the game, putting Ohio back on top 51-42 with 11 minutes to go.
Ohio continued to pressure EMU and pushed the lead to 15, 61-46, with 8:14 on the clock. Eastern went on a 7-1 run to bring it within nine, 62-53, with just 6:33 left to go in the game. The Eagles continued to trade buckets and a Lee triple from long-range brought Eastern within seven, 66-59. Treg Setty hit one-of-two free throws on the next trip and Lee connected on another long ball to make it a five-point, 67-62, lead, but Ohio Extended the lead to eight, yet again.
After five-straight points from Lee, Eastern was looking at a three-point deficit, 73-70, with 1:15 to go. Stevie Taylor stepped to the line for OU and knocked down a pair before Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College HS) hit a three-ball to make it a two-point game. In the next possession, Jerome Hunter (Buffalo, N.Y.-Queen City Prep (Alabama A&M)) fouled Taylor, sending the OU senior guard to the line. Taylor made the first and missed the second of the two free ones, with the rebound going out of bounds in EMU's favor, prompting Ohio's Head Coach Saul Phillips to call a timeout.
Head Coach Rob Murphy drew up a play for either Lee and Price and Lee received a pass in the corner. After a single dribble, the redshirt sophomore guard attempted to raise for a contested three-pointer. The shot fell short, leaving the Green and White on the wrong end of a 76-73 decision in Athens.
The Eagles return to the EMU Convocation Center Tuesday, Feb. 10, when the Eagles play host to Miami University. Eastern will be looking to avenge an 82-81 overtime loss in Oxford, Ohio to the RedHawks beginning at 7 p.m. from Ypsilanti
