Eagles Fall on the Road in MAC West Battle with Toledo

2/4/2015 9:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball

The Rockets scored the most points out of any EMU opponent this season

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team hit the road Wednesday, Feb. 4, to take on the University of Toledo at Savage Arena. The Eagles (14-8, 3-6 MAC) were upended by the Rockets (14-8, 6-3 MAC), 84-60, in their fourth-straight loss in Toledo, Ohio. UT scored on the first possession of the game and never relinquished the lead in the contest.

The Green and White saw a trio of student-athletes post double-figure scoring performances with Mike Talley (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale ABT (Duquesne)) leading the way, scoring 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Raven Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) followed suit, pouring in 15 points, while knocking down six free throws on seven attempts and Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College H.S.) added 10 points on 5-of-11 field goal attempts. Brandon Nazione (Howell, Mich.-Howell (Des Moines Area C.C.)) led EMU in rebounding, pulling down seven, while Jodan Price (Indianapolis, Ind.-Detroit Country Day (DePaul)) and Olalekan Ajayi (Winston-Salem, N.C.-Quality Education Academy (Collin College)) each caromed four boards. As a team, Eastern shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, while shooting poorly from beyond the arc, going 2-of-19 from downtown.

Toledo was stout on the offensive end, shooting 51.9 percent from the floor as the Rockets scored more points on Eastern than any other team has this season, while being just the first team to shoot more than 50 percent from the floor against the Eagles. UT was led by Justin Drummond who scored a game-high 20 points, while Julius Brown and J.D. Weatherspoon each added 15. Brown dished out six assists, while Jonathan Williams added five of his own.

Toledo began the game on a 7-0 run as Nathan Boothe knocked down a baby hook before Drummond knocked down a pair of jumpers including one from beyond the arc. Mike Samuels (Bushkill, Pa.-East Stroudburg North (Indiana State)) opened the scoring for EMU hitting a layup on an up-and-under move before Toledo added four-straight. The Rockets were able to push the lead to 10, before Eastern went on a 6-0 run, bringing the game within four, 14-10, with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

The Eagles kept the game within four until the Rockets added another run of six points, which was answered by an EMU five-point run. However, Toledo responded, extending the lead to 15, 38-23, with just 2:37 on the clock and the lead would stay at 15 heading into the half with Eastern trailing, 40-25. Through the final eight minutes and 30 seconds of play, the Eagles shot just 1-of-11, while Toledo went 5-for-11.

Talley led the way in the first 20 minutes of play, scoring 10 points, while Lee added seven. EMU turned the ball over on eight occasions, while forcing Toledo to flip the ball to EMU just two times. The Green and White shot just 34.5 percent from the floor, in comparison to Toledo's 55.2 percent clip. The Eagles did outrebound the Rockets, 17-16, in the opening 20 minutes, including nine offensive boards, however, Eastern couldn't convert on their second chances though, scoring just four points on nine opportunities.

Eastern opened the second half on a 4-0 run, bringing the game to within 11 after a pair of layups, but Toledo rebounded when Williams knocked down two free throws. After the Eagles and Rockets traded buckets in the next few possessions, the rockets extended the lead to 17 with 10:15 remaining in the game.

With 9:49 on the clock, Weatherspoon stripped the Eagles throwing an outlet pass to Williams, prompting a foul call on EMU's Price. EMU Head Coach Rob Murphy disagreed with the call and the officials called a technical foul on the fourth-year coach. Following the tech, Toledo went on a 14-0 run, extending the UT lead to 32, 77-45. Both teams traded points, before EMU scored eight of the final 10 points in the game, coming away on the wrong end of an 84-60 decision at Savage Arena.

The Eagles look to right the ship Saturday, Feb. 7, when they travel to Athens, Ohio to take on Ohio University at the OU Convocation Center. Eastern Michigan and the Bobcats (8-12, 3-6 MAC) will clash at 2 p.m. as Ohio is coming off of a close 83-82 victory over Akron at home.
