The Eagles defeated the No. 49-ranked Anteaters to close out the West Coast trip
IRVINE, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team picked up a remarked 5-2 win versus the No. 49-ranked University of California Irvine Anteaters Friday, Feb. 27. The Eagles (2-9) won the doubles point before taking four-of-six singles matches against the Anteaters (7-3).
Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova first dropped a 6-1 decision, but the Eagles came roaring back with a 6-3 win at No. 2-doubles as Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero defeated Sarah Gong and Arisha Ladhani, 6-3, and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna and Daphne Friedrichs came out victorious in the No. 3 doubles match, 6-3, clinching the doubles point.
After Martinovska dropped the No. 4-singles match, Eagle freshman Anna Veleva defeated Jennifer Andra, 6-3, 6-1, to give the Green and White a 2-1 lead. Kat Facey tied it up for the Anteaters with a 6-0, 6-3, win against Friedrichs at No. 3. Ribero was next to finish things up as she dispatched Vivien Dvali, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 before Supejova defeated Gong, 7-6, 6-4, to seal the Eagles' win. Gogvadze completed her match with a three-set victory to pick up the Green and White's fifth point.
"We hit our stride today and played with good energy," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We pulled out close matches today and that's been lacking for us thus far. Irvine is a great team and to beat them in their element is a great accomplishment. I'm very proud of my team and staff today.
Eastern heads back to Michigan Saturday, March 7, for a doubleheader at the Chippewa Raquet Club. The Eagles will square off with Illinois-Chicago at 1 p.m. before squaring off with Oakland at 8:30 p.m.
