The EMU baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to the Aggies
DAVIS, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the first game of its two-game set against the UC Davis Aggies Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Dobbins Baseball Complex. Junior catcher Tony DiLeo matched a career-high with three RBI but it was not enough as the Aggies scored a pair of solo runs in the final two innings to claim the walk-off victory over the Green and White. The Eagles fall to 2-6 on the season, while the Aggies improve to 6-2-1 with the win.
EMU managed five hits in the contest, including two from Michael Mioduszewski and DiLeo. Mioduszewski scored a pair of runs and knocked one in as well. Mitchell McGeeinhad the other base knock for Eastern. Freshman Brent Mattson (0-0) made his first collegiatestart on the hill for the Green and White. Mattson gave up six hits, three runs, and struck out two going five innings. Michael Marsinek (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
UC Davis opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after Aggies' starting pitcher Max Cordy struck out the side in the Eagles' half of the inning. The Aggies got a single and stolen base from Tino Lipson to put a runner on second with one out. Tanner Bily drove a single into centerfield, but Austin Wilson threw a bullet to catcher Tony DiLeo to peg Lipson at the plate to keep the game scoreless. After a hit batter, the Aggies were able to crack the scoreboard with an RBI single by Austin March to give the home team the early 1-0 advantage.
EMU responded with a two-out rally in the top of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Mioduszewskigot the rally started with a single through the left side and advanced to second on Brennan Williams' walk. DiLeo stepped up to the plate and drove a 2-0 pitch into the right centerfield gap for a two-run double scoring Mioduszewski and Williams.
The Aggies answered to tie the game in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally themselves. A two-out walk by Mattson to the Aggies' leading hitter, Nick Lynch, kept the inning alive and Austin March made him pay by sending the first pitch he saw into right field for an RBI double to knot the score at 2-2.
Eastern Michigan had a quick answer, scoring another pair of runs in the top of fourth inning to regain the lead, 4-2. McGeein led off with a double and moved to third on a Danny Kerr groundout. Mioduszewski roped a single up the middle to drive in McGeein and give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. After a passed ball and another productive groundout, DiLeo knocked in his third run of the game with a single through the box to take a two-run advantage, 4-2.
UC Davis inched closer, using a lead-off triple by Izaak Silva to begin the bottom of the fourth. Mattson was able to get the next batter to pop out to second baseman John Rubino, but Evan Heptig pushed Silva across with a one-out sacrifice fly to make the score 4-3 in the Eagles' favor.
Both pitching staffs settled in as the middle innings saw one hit between the teams and the Eagles still holding onto a slight one-run advantage. The Aggies got on the board again in the eighth inning to tie the game at four runs apiece. Relief pitcher Sam Delaplane got the first batter to fly out to centerfield, but the next batter doubled to center field and stole third. A walk to March caused Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde to go to the bullpen once again, bringing in Michael Marisnek. Marisnek walked the first batter he faced, setting up a bases loaded situation with only one out. The Eagles got the ground ball they were looking for, but an error by McGeein at third allowed the home team to tie the game. Marisnek got another ground ball from the next batter, this time McGeein made the play and completed the 5-3 inning-ending double play.
The Eagles' half of the ninth got off to a good start, with a leadoff walk to Kerr. Coach Van Ameyde put on the bunt to advance him into scoring position, but Joe Kennedy did not get it down and struck out for the first out. Williams lined into a double play to end the threat for the Green and White.
UC Davis started the bottom of the ninth with a double from Heptig on the first pitch of the inning. A hit batter, and successful sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out for the Aggies. Van Amedye hit the bullpen again, bringing in Matthew Beaton to try to send the game into extra innings. Beaton beaned the first batter he faced, but got a line out to keep the bases loaded with two outs. The ensuing batter, March, knocked a 3-2 pitch into center field for the walk-off single for the Aggies.
The Eagles and Aggies conclude the brief two-set on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. PT (5 p.m. ET) at the Dobbins Baseball Complex. Live audio and statistics will be available on UCDavisAggies.com.
