Timely Hitting and Strong Pitching Leads Eagles Past UC Davis

EMU baseball salvages a split in the two-game set against the Aggies

DAVIS, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team used some timely hitting and strong pitching to defeat the UC Davis Aggies Wednesday, Feb. 25, by a final score of 4-2 at Dobbins Stadium.  Redshirt-sophomore Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) had the go-ahead two-out RBI single in the eighth to give the Eagles the lead, while solid pitching from Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz.-Perry) and Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) shut down the Aggie bats.

With the victory, EMU improves to 3-6 on the season while UC Davis drops to 6-3-1 on the season.

Sam Delaplane (1-0) pitched the final 2.1 innings to collect his first win of the season.  The sophomore only gave up one hit, while striking out four.  Freshman Kyle Huckaby was stellar in his first career start, surrendering just one earned run on five hits while striking out three in 6.2 innings of work. Spencer Henderson (0-1) took the loss for the Aggies going two innings and giving up one run.

The Eagles matched a season-high with 12 hits in the ball game.  Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), Mioduszewski, Adam Dennison (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Padua Franciscan), and Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) all collected a pair of hits for the Green and White.  The bottom third of the order did most of the damage for EMU, as the trio of Dennison, Wilson and David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) combined to go 5-for-12 with three RBI.

EMU loaded the bases in the top of the first inning but were unable to push a run across to get on the board.  Senior John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) led off the game with an opposite field double down the right field line and advanced to third on Williams single to left.  Jordan Peterson walked to load the bases after Williams stole his first base of the season.  UC Davis starting pitcher, Nat Hamby, was able to get Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) to bounce into the 5-2-3 double play and ended the Eagles' threat by getting John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) to ground out to second.

Following a 1-2-3 inning from EMU starter Kyle Huckaby, the Green and White cracked the scoreboard with an Austin Wilson RBI ground out to bring in Mioduszewski who led off the top of the second with a double.  The Aggies quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run to tie the game at 1-1.

An RBI single through the box by Dennison drove in Montgomery to give the Eagles the lead back in the top of the fourth, 2-1.  UC Davis, however, answered once again in its half of the inning with RBI single from Guillermo Salazar to knot the score at 2-2.

The teams went in order in the fifth inning, but both squads threatened to break the tie in the sixth and seventh innings.  The Eagles and Aggies put a pair of runners on base in the sixth and seventh but neither team could scratch one across to break the tie.

After a pair of singles from Williams and McGeein in the top of the eighth, Mioduszewski stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second and two outs.  The redshirt-sophomore drilled a 1-1 pitch up the middle for an RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.  The Eagles tacked-on an insurance run in the ninth on a David Lett two-strike RBI single which made the final score 4-2.

Eastern Michigan returns to the diamond Friday, Feb. 27, when it travels to Santa Clara (4-3) for the first of a four-game series against the Broncos.  First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT at Stephen Schott Stadium.
