Wrestling Falls to CMU In Final Meet of Regular Season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team closed out its 2014-15 regular season with a 24-12 loss to a visiting Central Michigan University squad here Friday night (Feb. 20) in the Convocation Center in a Mid-American Conference dual meet.

EMU redshirt freshman Blake Caudill (Butler, Pa.-Butler) started the night's action with a stunning pin over CMU's Brent Fleetwood with just two seconds left in the match.

Trailing by a 6-0 count, Caudill turned in the lightning-quick move to record the pin and put the Eagles up 6-0 after the initial bout of the evening.

Eastern's redshirt junior Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson) then turned in a strong effort in his 133-pound match against Tyler Keselring, forging a 1-1 tie late in the final period on an escape move but Keselring posted a 2-1 win on the basis of riding time.

The third match of the night featured EMU redshirt junior Michael Shaw (Bangor, Mich.-Allegan) against Zach Horan at 141 pounds.

Horan recorded a near fall and takedown in the second period to go on top, 5-0, and Shaw managed an escape point to start the third but Horan would add a takedown for a 7-2 victory to tie the match at 6-6.

The 149-pound match saw the Eagles' Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) battle Central's Colin Heffernan to a scoreless effort in the first period and Heffernan notched a second-period escape for a 1-0 advantage.

Barber came back to tie it at 1-1 with an escape of his own in the early part of the final period and the two went into a one-minute overtime and Heffernan got the 5-1 win with a takedown and near fall in the final seconds of the OT period.

At 157 pounds, EMU redshirt senior Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia) squared off against CMU's Cody LeCount and the match was deadlocked at 1-1 into the third period with escape points from both wrestlers and the second match in a row went into an overtime period with LeCount pulling off a takedown in the extra session for a 3-1 victory.

The 165-pound matchup between Eastern's redshirt sophomore Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) and Central's Jordan Wohlfort was a tight one as Marry notched the first point in the second period on an escape followed by a takedown from Wohlfort for a 2-1 Central lead and bumped to 4-1 on a Wohlfort takedown to begin the third.

Marry made it 4-2 with an escape, but Wohlfort added another takedown for a 6-2 lead and finished with a riding-time point for a 7-2 Chippewa win.

Central's Jordan Ellingwood started the 174-pound match with a takedown of EMU freshman Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill-Libertyville) in the first period and would then pin the Eagle at the 3:43 mark to give the visitors a commanding 21-6 lead.

The 184-pound match between Eastern redshirt senior Mike Curby (Osseo, Mich.-Hillsdale) and CMU's Austin Severn started with a scoreless first, but Severn would go on to record a 4-2 win.

EMU redshirt junior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) started his 197-pound match against Central's Jackson Lewis trailing by a 1-0 count but came back with an escape of his own in the early stages of the third period to knot it at 1-1 and the match would proceed into the night's third overtime bout and Abro would respond with a great takedown in overtime for the 3-1 victory.

EMU redshirt freshman heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) opened the night's final match with a quick 2-0 lead on a takedown of Central's Adam Robinson in the first period and Hutchison would make it 7-5 with a flurry of action in the third period and the Eagle freshman would hold on for the 7-5 win.

Eastern, now 8-12 overall and 1-7 in MAC action, will be idle until March 7-8 when the Eagles travel to Columbia, Mo. to compete in the MAC Championship. Central completed the regular season with a 7-7 overall record and a 6-2 league mark.
