The Eagles used seven bout victories to earn the win over the Bulls
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team earned its first Mid-American Conference victory of the 2014-15 season and snapped a eight-dual losing streak, taking down the University at Buffalo, 22-10, with seven bout victories Sunday, Feb. 15.
The Eagles (8-11, 1-6 MAC) earned six decisions and one major decision en route to its first conference victory of the season, while UB grabbed one extra-point win and two decisions on the afternoon.
The Bulls took the first lead with a major decision at 125 lbs. but the Green and White responded at 133 lbs. when redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto notched a 6-4 decision over Sean Peacock. EMU trailed Buffalo, 7-3, heading into the 149 lb. weight class as Colt Cotten earned the 5-3 decision at 141 lbs.
Trailing UB, the Eagles roared back with four-straight bout wins, including a shutout victory from Nicholas Barber at 149 lbs. and a 14-2 major decision from Brandon Zeerip at 157 lbs., to take the 16-7 advantage with three bouts remaining.
The Bulls saw what would be their final win of the night at 184 lbs. as Joe Ariola notched a 6-1 decision but redshirt-junior Anthony Abro locked up the meet for the Green and White at 197 lbs. The Canton, Mich. put the dual out of reach with his 6-4 decision at 197 lbs. before Gage Hutchison earned a 9-2 decision in the heavyweight division.
Eastern Michigan will cap off its regular season Friday, Feb. 20 when it returns to the Convocation Center for a Senior Night dual against in-state conference foe Central Michigan. First bout is slated for 7 p.m.
