Softball Falls in Season Opener to Missouri State

The Eagles dropped a 4-0 decision to the Bears at the Texas A&M Tournament
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University softball team was shut out, 4-0, by the Missouri State University Bears at the Texas A&M Tournament in its season opener Friday, Feb. 13.
With the loss, EMU falls to 0-1 overall on the season, while MSU improves to 5-1 overall. The Eagles tallied just three hits on the afternoon with freshman Haley Hostetler recording her first collegiate hit in the bottom of the sixth inning. The senior-freshman combo of Lindsay Rich (0-1) and Trisha Trujillo combined for seven innings pitched in the first game of the season. Rich made the start, tossing four complete innings before Trujillo came on in relief in the top of the fifth with two runners on board and no outs.
For Missouri State, Chelsea Jones picked up her third win of the season, throwing 6.1 innings, while Erin Struemph grabbed her third save of the season with 0.2 innings of relief work.
After a scoreless four innings, the Bears broke open the scoreboard in the top of the fifth innning, notching four runs on three hits. Senior Ali Trickey led off the inning with a single to the pitcher before advancing to second on a walk. Freshman Erika Velasquez came through for MSU, driving the ball up the middle to score Trickey and forcing Head Coach Melissa Gentile to make a pitching change. Trujillo entered the game with runners on first and second before issuing the second walk of the inning to load the bases with no outs.
A deep fly ball to center field allowed the runner from third to score, putting Missouri State up 2-0 over Eastern before the Eagles registered the second out of the inning on a pop up to shortstop. EMU was unable to retire Chelsea Jones as she laced a ball up the middle, allowing two runs to cross the plate before the final out of the inning was recorded.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Green and White looked to get its offense going when Hostetler secured her first career hit to center field, but a ground out to second base dashed the Eagles hopes of scoring, trailing 4-0 heading into the final inning. With three outs to go, Eastern tried to jump start its offense in the bottom of the seventh inning when sophomore Michelle Kriegshauser drove a single to right field before junior Abi Clark knocked a double to the center field fence to move Kriegshauser just 60 ft. from home plate. Despite the Eagles' best effort, the final two outs of the inning came when relief pitcher Struemph struck one batter out and forced a foul out to first base to close out the game.
Eastern Michigan will conclude day one of the Texas A&M Tournament when it takes on the No. 23 Aggies at 5:30 p.m. CT.
