The Eagles advanced seven grapplers into the quarterfinals

RENO, Nev. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team placed three wrestlers while finishing tenth as a team at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Dec. 20. In total, seven of EMU's grapplers advanced to at least the quarterfinals of their respective brackets.

Eastern traveled 14 wrestlers out west for the tournament. In total they notched 29 wins, while placing redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) in fourth place, and junior Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt) and redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) in sixth place. This was good for 56 team points, and a tenth place finish out of 24 teams.

Barber came into the tournament as the No. 5 seed at 149 lbs. He started off his day rattling off three straight wins- 21-5 technical fall, 9-3 decision, and a 3-2 decision over the No. 4 seed.

Then came a matchup against the No. 1 seed where he dropped a tight match, 3-2. Barber rebounded in the consolation semis with a 6-4 decision. Unfortunately he did not get the chance to fully compete for third place, as his night ended with a medical forfeit, wrapping up fourth place.

At 133 lbs., Wireman started off with a bang, dominating on his way to an 18-0 tech fall win. He followed that up with the biggest upset for EMU on the day when he defeated No. 2 seed Nathan Kraisser of Campbell in a 7-6 decision. He advanced to the semifinals after another tech fall, this time winning 15-0.

Wireman was cut down in the semis by the No. 3 seed, and sustained an injury in the bout, which also ended his day early. He took sixth place after forfeiting his final two matches.

The other sixth place finish came at 197 lbs. from Abro. The No. 11 ranked grappler in the country came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed at the weight class. He battled his way into the semifinals with a 10-1 major decision, a 4-3 decision, and an overtime pin (9:00).

In the semis he met his match, being defeated by the No. 4 seeded Marshall Haas of The Citadel. Like his other top-six teammates, Abro's day was cut short due to injury, as he forfeited his final two bouts.

Elsewhere on the day, EMU's lone 125 lbs. wrestler, redshirt freshman Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria),picked up two wins on the day, a 15-1 major decision and an 8-6 decision before bowing out with losses to the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals and No. 3 seed in the consolation bracket.

Also wrestling at 133 lbs. redshirt sophomore Blake Caudill (Butler, Pa.-Butler) won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals, winning 5-4 and 3-2 decisions. In the quarterfinal he was tripped up by the No. 4 seed and eventually fell in the consolation bracket.

EMU also had two grapplers at 141 lbs. with redshirt sophomore Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption) and redshirt senior Michael Shaw (Allegan, Mich.-Allegan) competing. Springer came in as the No. 6 seed at the weight class.

He won his first two matches 8-7 and a 14-6 major decision to get to the quarterfinals. There he was outlasted by the No. 3 seed, dropping him to the consolation rounds. In the consolation, he picked up another win, a 6-2 decision, before bowing out.

Meanwhile Shaw won his first bout 9-2 before losing in the second round to the No. 4 seed. In his first consolation match he came away victorious 15-8 before dropping his next match.

Also making the quarterfinals was redshirt freshman Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven-Brownstown) at 184 lbs. He won his first two matchups 7-3 and 5-2. In the quarters he fell to the No. 2 seed 6-2, but found redemption in the first consolation round, defeating Matt Irick of Indiana 10-8, to revenge a loss earlier this season. In the next consolation match, Hillman was defeated by the No. 3 seed.

Also finding victory throughout the day were redshirt junior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) who won his first match with his sixth pin of the season, this one coming in 5:59. Redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven), who was the four seed at 165 lbs., won two bouts on the day, with a fall in the first round (2:43) and a 6-5 decision in the consolation bracket.

Redshirt senior Derek Davison (LaSalle, Mich.-Monroe), also at 165 lbs. won one match with a 6-0 decision. Redshirt junior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) won his first match 9-7 before bowing out. Finally redshirt sophomore Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) lost in the first round to the No. 3 heavyweight, but bounced back in the consolation with a pin (6:10) and twodecision wins (5-2, 9-3) before dropping his final consolation match.

The Eagles now close the lid on the 2015 portion of the schedule at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. The two-day tournament, hosted by Northwestern, begins Tuesday, Dec. 29.
