YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team begins the week on the road with a short trip up the road to East Lansing to take on Michigan State in a mid-week dual, Wednesday night, Dec. 2.  The matchup between the Eagles and Spartans is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Jenison Field House.

PREPARING FOR BATTLE WITH THE SPARTANS: EMU and MSU have squared off every year since the 2007-08 season, with Sparty holding a 7-1 advantage in that time frame.  The lone EMU win came in 2011-12 when Eastern upended MSU 20-16, Nov. 18.  Michigan State enters Wednesday's contest with a winless, 0-3 record, dropping duals to Utah Valley, Ohio, and Clarion, all at the EMU duals.

EAGLES CLEAN UP AT CLEVELAND STATE: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team handled its first road match of the season with ease Friday night with a 32-3 win over Cleveland State University at the Wolstein Center, Nov. 20.

The Eagles controlled the dual from the start, winning the first eight bouts of the night to take a commanding 29-0 lead.  Despite dropping the ninth match, they cleaned up in the final matchup to take nine of the ten on the night.

In total the Eagles won one bout via pin, while another was won on a technical fall.  The other seven matchups ended in favor of the Eagles by decisions.

EMU SMOOTH AT KEYSTONE CLASSIC: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wrapped up a packed weekend with an impressive showing at the annual Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Sunday, Nov. 22.  The Eagles placed five wrestlers, all in the top four, including redshirt senior Anthony Abro, who took the title at 197.

In addition to Abro, the Green and White had redshirt junior Nicholas Barber finish second at 149, redshirt senior Vincent Pizzuto finish third at 125 in his season debut, and redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez, as well as redshirt junior Jacob Davis finish in fourth at 165 and 174 respectively.

EMU sent 14 grapplers to the mats throughout the day, garnering a total of 28 victories.  In all, the Eagles totaled 92.5 points, good for a team finish of fourth place out of eleven teams.

LAST TIME WE MET: In a dual that would come down to the final bout of the night, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad was unable to pull off a victory over the Spartans of Michigan State University, falling 18-16 at the Convocation Center Friday, Jan. 23, 2015.

Both teams would actually split the matchups, 5-5, but MSU would pull off the victory with the help of three major decisions.  The Spartans return only one grappler from that starting lineup with, Mitch Rogaliner at 125.  Meanwhile EMU returns four out of the five wrestlers who claimed victory in that bout.

UP NEXT ON THE MATS: Eastern ends their week by returning home for its first Mid-American Conference dual against Buffalo, Sunday, Dec. 6 at Bowen Field House.  The matchup with the Bulls is set to begin at 2 p.m.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Entering the final season of their storied careers, redshirt seniors Anthony Abro and Vincent Pizzuto are near the top of the EMU record book in career wins.  Abro has 79 while Pizzuto has 80, which is good for 11th and 10th place respectively on the all-time list.  Steve Brown is the program leader in victories, racking up 117 from 1984-88.

ABRO RANKED NATIONALLY: Redshirt senior Anthony Abro is currently ranked 9th at 197 by InterMat wrestling, while also being ranked 16th by TheOpenMat.com  Abro is coming off of his best season as an Eagle, in which he racked up 28 wins, and ended his season with a top-16 finish at the NCAA Championships.  He is currently 8-1 on the year in 2015-16.
