Wresting Takes Two At the EMU Duals, Place Four in the Open

Freshman Noah Gonser earns victory in the 125 Open
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team opened its 2015-16 season, Saturday, Nov. 7, with a pair of wins over Clarion and Bloomsburg at the EMU Duals. The Eagles also participated in the Open portion of the tournament and placed four wrestlers, including freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) winning the 125 weight class bracket.
EMU claimed victory over Clarion (28-12) and Bloomsburg (38-6) before falling to Purdue (30-13). Individually, redshirt junior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) won all three of his bouts at 157, while seven other Eagles won two matchups.
As for the Open, EMU sent 11 grapplers onto the mats for the tournament, including three at the 157 weight class. Seven freshmen made their EMU debuts in the tournament, Gonser, Sa'Derian Perry (141), J.J. Wolfe (149), Zac Carson (157), David Kasper (165), Jared Langley (197) and George Lahar V (HWT).
Besides Gonser, sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) placed second at the 184 while Wolfe placed sixth in the 149 and Langley placed eighth in the 197 in their Eagles debuts.
In the opening match of the season, redshirt freshman Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) made his EMU dual debut in a big way with a 16-1 technical fall. Clarion would win the next two matchups before EMU responded with two victories at 149 and 157 by redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) and Marry, with Barber's coming on a 10-0 major decision.
EMU would go on to claim victory at 174 by redshirt junior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward), as well as at 197 and heavyweight by redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) and redshirt sophomore Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) to finish up the 28-12 match win. Abro won the major decision 17-6.
In the second match, Torres once again won the opening bout on a technical fall, 17-3. Following a Bloomsburg victory at 133, EMU would shut out the Huskies the rest of the way, including pins from Marry and Abro, as well as a tiebreaker victory from Davis.
In the final matchup of the day, EMU earned victories at 141 by redshirt sophomore Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption) over No. 13 ranked Danny Sabatello in an 11-6 decision. They also won the 157 bout courtesy of a Marry pin, and 184 with redshirt freshman Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven-Brownstown) earning the major decision, 13-3.
In the Open, Gonser ran the table at the 125 class, winning all four of his bouts including one by pin and one by major decision. Perry at the 141 won his first two bouts by major decision and forfeit before bowing out in the consolation round.
Wolfe won a pair of 6-2 decisions before losing to enter the consolation rounds. There he nabbed a sudden victory and a 2-0 decision before falling in the 5th place match. EMU's three 157 wrestlers saw one victory from redshirt senior Chris Rau (Deerfield, Mich.-Dundee) and two from redshirt freshman LaRone Mack (Southfield, Mich.-Harrison). Meanwhile Carson won four bouts in his Eagle debut.
At 165, Kasper won one match in his first EMU action, winning by a pin. MacCallum at 184 won his first four matches to make a run to the finals before falling in the finals. He won one match by a technical fall, while the another was won by sudden victory.
Finally at the 197, Langley won three of his matches before being felled in the seventh place bout. The freshman won by decisions of 5-2, 9-3 and 4-0.
The Eagles now hit the road for the first time this season, as they head to Cleveland, Ohio for a dual with the Cleveland State Vikings, Friday, Nov.20. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
