Freshman Noah Gonser earns his second podium finish

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wrapped up another successful weekend on the mats at the Michigan State Open Sunday, Nov. 15.  The Green and White placed two grapplers in the tournament, while they earned a total of 27 wins on the day.

Highlighting the Eagles was once again freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), who followed up his first place finish at the EMU open with a third place finish at 125 at MSU.  Gonser began his day with back-to-back pins in 2:44 and 4:06 respectively.  He then dropped the semifinal match before rallying in the third place match with a 4-0 decision.    The rookie is now 7-1 to start his EMU career, with two podium finishes.

The other Eagle to finish on the stand was fellow freshman Jared Langley (Newton, Kan.-Newton).  After placing eighth at the EMU Open, Langley earned a fifth place finish at MSU in the 197 tournament.  The Kansas native faced early adversity as he dropped his first match 10-3, but the freshman rattled off three straight victories to earn a place in the fifth place match.  The first win was a technical fall 17-2, while the third was a pin in just 34 seconds.

In the fifth place match, Langley grinded out the 5-2 decision to earn his second podium finish in just his second event.  Langley now sports a 7-4 record to begin his career.

Besides the two Eagles who placed in the tournament, EMU also sent out 12 other wrestlers throughout the day.  In the Freshman/Sophomore division, EMU had freshmen Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) at 141, J.J. Wolfe (Dakota, Ill.Dakota) at 149, Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Uniontown Lake) at 157, David Kasper  (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) at 165, and George Lahar V (Birch Run, Mich.-Birch Run) at 285, while redshirt freshman Chad Decker (Jackson, Mich.-Grass Lake) wrestled at 174.

Perry picked up a trio of victories on the day, including one on a tech fall 15-0 and another on a pin (3:40).  Wolfe won two of his four bouts, including one by a pin in just 59 seconds.  Carson also won two matchups, by a pair of major decisions, 16-8 and 11-3.  Kasper won one of his decisions, 4-1, while Decker won his first two matchups 10-8 and 3-2.  Finally Lahar V claimed two victories in the consolation bracket with a 5-2 win and a 7-6 tiebreaker win.

Elsewhere on the day, redshirt freshman Ben Calandrino (Howell, Mich.-Howell) won two matches in the 133 bracket, with his first victory coming with a 12-0 major decision.  Redshirt freshman Ben Griffin (Canton, Mich.-Canton) took one victory at the 149 tournament with a 3-1 decision.  Redshirt senior Chris Rau (Deerfield, Mich.-Dundee) also took a victory in the 157 bracket, winning a major decision 20-7.  Finally, in the 184 tournament, sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) picked up two victories in the consolation bracket, winning bouts 9-2 and 10-8.

The Eagles will get back into dual action, Friday, Nov. 20, as they head to Cleveland, Ohio for a matchup with the Cleveland State Vikings.  The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
