YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team hits the road for the first time in the 2015-16 season for a dual with the Cleveland State Vikings, Friday Nov. 20.  The evening match will begin at 7 p.m. at the Wolstein Center.  The dual will be streamed live on ESPN 3, and can also be followed live on Twitter at @EMUWrestling.

Following the match, the squad will trek further east for the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa.  The tournament, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, will be an all-day affair on Sunday, Nov. 22.  This will be the second straight season EMU will compete at the Keystone, as the team placed third in last year's edition.  Live results of the Keystone Classic can be found at Trackwrestling.com.

CLASH WITH CLEVELAND STATE: Friday's bout marks the 11th straight matchup between the two squads, with EMU holding the 7-3 advantage during that span.  CSU enters the contest with a 4-1 record after defeating John Carroll University 40-6 and going 3-1 at the Ohio Duals.

One of Cleveland State's three victories in the series came in last season's dual, as the Vikings were victorious 20-15.  They return seven of the ten wrestlers from that dual, including the No. 10 ranked heavyweight this season in Riley Shaw.  Five of the seven returnees this season won their individual matchups for CSU in that meeting.

EAGLES TAKE TWO AT EMU DUALS: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team opened its 2015-16 season, Saturday, Nov. 7, with a pair of wins over Clarion and Bloomsburg at the EMU Duals.  EMU claimed victory over Clarion (28-12) and Bloomsburg (38-6) before falling to Purdue (30-13).  Individually, redshirt junior Devan Marry won all three of his bouts at 157, while seven other Eagles won two matchups.

PIN 'EM UP: All three of Marry's wins at the EMU Duals came on pins, as the redshirt junior dominated his competition.  Versus Clarion he put his opponent into submission at the 2:54 mark.  He followed that up with a pin against Bloomsburg at the four minute mark.  Finally he pinned the No. 13 ranked Doug Welch of Purdue in just 1:18.

GONSER HEADLINES EMU IN THE OPEN: Freshman Noah Gonser had a stellar debut for EMU at the EMU Duals, Nov. 7.  In his first collegiate action, the Grand Blanc native went undefeated, 4-0, on his way to the 125 title.  He had one pin and one major decision in his four victories.

Besides Gonser, sophomore Kayne MacCallum placed second at 184 while freshman J.J. Wolfe placed sixth at 149 and fellow freshman Jared Langley placed eighth at 197 in their Eagles debuts.

FRESHMEN IMPRESS AT MSU OPEN: A pair of freshmen continued to find success at their second competition, the MSU Open, Nov. 15.  Noah Gonser and Jared Langley placed for the second time in as many tries for the Eagles, as Gonser placed third at 125, while Langley finished fifth at 197.  In all, EMU claimed 27 total wins at the tournament.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Entering the final season of their storied careers, redshirt seniors Anthony Abro and Vincent Pizzuto are near the top of the EMU record book in career wins.  Abro has 73 while Pizzuto has 76, which is good for 13th and 12th place respectively on the all-time list.  Steve Brown is the program leader in victories, racking up 117 from 1984-88.

ABRO RANKED NATIONALLY: Redshirt senior Anthony Abro is currently ranked 11th at 197 by InterMat wrestling, while also ranked 18th by TheOpenMat.com  Abro is coming off of his best season as an Eagle, where he racked up 28 wins, and ended his season with a top-16 finish at the NCAA Championships.  He is currently 2-1 on the year in 2015-16.

UP NEXT ON THE MATS: EMU remains on the road, this time taking the short venture north to East Lansing for a dual against the Spartans of Michigan State.  The mid-week dual begins at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 2.
