COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (EMUEagles.com) – Amid a strong start to the 2015-16 season where the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team has found themselves on the podium often, the Eagles were recognized for their efforts away from the pool, Monday, Nov. 23. The College Swimming Coach Association of America announced the Green and White were one of 110 programs to post a perfect 100 Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
Eastern Michigan was one of four Mid-American Conference schools to be recognized for academic excellence with perfect GSR's, joining Bowling Green, Buffalo, and Ohio. Additionally, EMU is one of 71 women's team's to hold a 100 GSR nationally.
The GSR is a NCAA measurement that enhances the federally mandated graduation-rate by including student-athlete transfer data in its calculation. It was developed in response to colleges and universities who asked for graduation data that more accurately reflects the mobility among students in today's higher education climate. The report provides information about two groups of students at college or university: (1) all undergraduate students who were enrolled in a full-time program of studies for a degree and (2) student-athletes who received athletics aid from the college or university for any period of time during their entering year.
The NCAA reported the four-year GSR among Division I college athletes to be 83 percent in a Nov. 4 release, while swimming & diving has risen to a 90.1 GSR, with women boasting a 93 percent and men holding an 86 percent. Women's swimming and diving ranks second among sports with at least one hundred programs nationally, second to only women's lacrosse.
Monday's GSR report gives graduation information about students and student-athletes who entered EMU in 2008. This is the most recent graduating class for which the required six years of information is available. The GSR differs slightly from the federal graduation rates for several reasons. The GSR is designed to assess the graduation of scholarship student-athletes who initially enroll at an institution during a particular fall or spring semester and earn a baccalaureate degree within six years of their initial collegiate enrollment.
Following a break for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Eagles return to competition, Dec. 4-5, for the EMU Invitiational. Competition is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m., Dec. 4, in Jones Natatorium.
