All three boats finished with better times and places
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University rowing team completed its first race of the season at the Head of the Oklahoma Saturday, Oct. 3. EMU raced three boats, and all three found improvement from last year's race.
The first race, the Women's Collegiate 8+, saw the EMU crewed boat finish in eighth place, which was up from tenth in last year's race. They crossed the finish line with a time of 15:40.81.
Following that was the Women's Collegiete 4+ race, which had two EMU boats on the water. The A boat just edged out the B boat, as they finished back-to-back in 10th and 11th place. This was up from the 15th and 19th place finishes from a year ago. The final times registered at 17:50.100 for A and 17:55.05 for the B.
Then the day turned to night on the Oklahoma River and the team prepared for the OGE Night Sprints.
In the first sprint with the 8+ boat, the Tauan Jeffrey coxed boat improved on its time from last year, finishing in 1:38.73, up 12 seconds from last year.
The second night sprint pitted the A boat against the B boat once again. This time the B boat got its revenge, finishing ahead of A by three seconds. Compared to last year, the boats finished 17 and 20 seconds faster respectively.
"It was a great weekend to get out racing and see our early season speed," Head Coach Kemp Savage explained. "The University of Oklahoma and University of Central Oklahoma were incredibly gracious hosts and made it feel like a home race. We are getting back to work Monday to go race in East Lansing this weekend."
The Eagle rowers return to the water this Sunday, Oct. 11 at the Head of the Grand in East Lansing, Mich.
