Rowing Finds Success at the Head of the Grand

The Green and White claimed victory in the Novice 8 race
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University Women's Rowing team completed its day at the Head of the Grand in East Lansing, Mich., with a successful day by many of the EMU boats. The headliner was the Novice 8 "A" boat, which captured first place in its race Sunday morning.
The boat, comprised of one sophomore and eight freshman, seven of which were making their EMU rowing debuts, crossed the finish line with a time of 13:01.0. This was 21 seconds faster than the boat that finished in second place and beat out boats from Case Western and Grand Valley State.
The other two Novice boats competing in the race, boats "B" and "C," all of which had rowers making their collegiate debuts, finished with times of 14:12.0 and 15:23.0 respectively.
In the first EMU race of the day, the Varsity 4 race, EMU had three veteran laced squads going up against some of the top competition in the area. The "A" and "B" boats finished back-to-back in third and fourth place respectively, only behind two boats from Michigan State. They finished with times of 13:00.0 ane 13:08.0 respectively. The third boat in this race, the "C" boat, crossed the line with a time of 13:49.0.
Finally in the women's Varsity 8 race, EMU found themselves just behind the Spartans once again. The "A" boat crossed the finish line in third place, behind two MSU boats, and had a time of 11:51.0, just three seconds behind second place. The "B" boat in the race finished with a time of 13:13.0.
"This was a great weekend for our Novice Team winning their first race," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "The Varsity did well against the Big-10 competition of MSU and there are some places we can get more speed out of the 8's. It is time to build some speed before the Head of the Hooch."

The Eagles will now take an almost three week break before their last race of the fall season. This will take place at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn. The two-day event is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 8.
