YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad continues its road stint with three duals in Pennsylvania. The Eagles will first take on Clarion Saturday, Jan. 10 before heading to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the Pitt Duals Sunday, Jan. 11. At the Pitt Duals, EMU will go up against Duke and N.C. State.

LIFE ON THE ROAD: Since the EMU Duals/Open, Nov. 15, the Eagles have competed in eight-straight road matches and look to conclude the away stint following their weekend trip to the Keystone State, Jan. 10-11.
The Green and White will return to Ypsilanti, Mich. for its first dual of the 2015 calendar year in the Convocation Center when it takes on Cleveland State, Jan. 15.

PIZZUTO RANKS THIRD IN JANUARY MAC POLL: Redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto is ranked in the monthly Mid-American Conference poll for the second-straight month after picking up four victories in the month of December and a win in his first conferece dual of the season. The North Jackson, Ohio native grabbed two wins at the Northwestern Duals over opponents from Princeton and Cal Poly, Dec. 6, before picking up one win at the Midlands Championships.
Pizzuto knotted the score at 6-6 against Northern Iowa, Jan, 4, with a pin over Leighton Gaul in 3:43 to give him a 7-9 overall record and a 1-0 record in conference action.

EMU DROPS FIRST MAC DUAL OF THE NEW YEAR: In its first Mid-American Conference dual of the 2014-15 season, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad was unable to keep pace with the University of Northern Iowa Sunday, Jan. 4. falling 24-15.
After the Green and White forfeited the first bout of the dual at 125 lbs., redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto knotted the score at 6-6, pinning Leighton Gaul in 3:43 in the 133 lb. match. The Eagles took their only lead of the dual with its second-straight pin as Michael Shaw secured the six points for EMU in the second period.
Following the pin, Northern Iowa notched five-straight decisons before Anthony Abro earned the Eagles final victory of the afternoon at 197 lbs.

ALL-TIME AGAINST WEEKEND OPPONENTS:  Eastern Michigan holds the slight 6-5-1 advantage over its three opponents in the upcoming weekend.
The Eagles have edged out Clarion on five occasions, lost three matches and tied one in the nine meetings between the two squads. Last season, the Green and White earned a 26-15 victory over the Golden Eagles at the EMU Duals, Nov. 16.
Eastern and Duke have each notched one win apiece in the all-time series after the Eagles knotted the all-time record with a 26-10 win at the 2014 Pitt Duals, Jan. 12.
In the final dual of the weekend, EMU hopes to knot the all-time series at 1-1 against N.C. State after falling to the Wolfpack, 32-11, in the first meeting between the two squads at the Pitt Duals, Jan. 12.

A LOOK AT CLARION: The Golden Eagles have struggled to start the 2014-15 season, posting a 1-8 record coming into the Saturday meeting with the Eagles. Clarion's lone victory came against Bloomsburg, Dec. 19, which the Golden Eagles took down the Huskies, 20-19.
Clarion has faced off against two MAC opponents, falling to both Central Michigan and Northern Illinois at the EMU Duals, Nov. 15 and will welcome in its third MAC opponent Thursday, Jan. 8 when they take on Ohio University in a home dual before matching up against EMU. Clarion is led by junior Michael Pavasko, who is one of just four Golden Eagles with a winning record. Pavasko represents the 174 lbs. weight class and has notched a team-best 14 wins on the season, while Daniel Sutherland has posted 13 wins on the season at 184 lbs. The Golden Eagles' strength comes at the bottom half of the lineup as the final two grapplers with winning records coming from Ryan Darch at 197 lbs. and Evan Daley in the heavyweight division.

SCOUTING THE FIELD AT PITT: Eastern's two North Carolina opponents at the Pitt Duals bring an 11-3 overall record into the duals as Duke holds a 5-1 dual record and N.C. State has a 7-3 mark on the young season.
The Wolfpack travel to the Keystone State as the No. 22-ranked team in the nation with a 7-3 overall record and boasts a roster that carries three nationally-ranked grapplers. N.C. State is led by No. 3 heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski, who is a perfect 16-0 on the season, while No. 15 Max Rohskopf has notched a team-best 17 wins on the season at 165 lbs. The Wolfpack's impressive top-three rounds out at 141 lbs. with No. 17 Sam Speno who is 6-5 this season.
After dropping its first dual of the season to No. 9 Nebraska, Duke has posted a five-match win streak, including an 18-17 victory over No. 22 N.C. State, Jan. 7. The Blue Devils have shuffled around their starting lineup this season, seeing at least two different starters in six weight classes. Jacob Kasper brings a team-best 16 wins at 157 lbs. into the weekend dual, while No. 5 Connor Hartman in 7-1 at 197 lbs.  Three other Duke grapplers have posted double-digit wins this season, while Brandon Gambucci has notched four pins on the season at 141 lbs.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY: This year's Pitt Duals will mark the fourth consecutive season that the Eagles have traveled to Pittsburgh, Pa. to compete in the tournament. The Green and White holds a 5-8 overall record at Fitzgerald Field House after going 1-2 in 2014.
Last season, the Eagles started off the day with a 26-10 victory over Duke before dropping two-straight to North Carolina and N.C. State. The lone EMU victory allowed former Head Coach Derek DelPorto to tie the all-time career coaching wins record as it marked the 80th win of his career as Eastern's head coach.
On the mats,  Jared Germaine continued to be perfect in his final season for Eastern as he went 3-0 on the day with one pin and two decisions, including a win over No. 10 Nathan Kraisser of UNC. Phillip Joseph and Brandon Zeerip each clinched two wins for Eastern as Joseph went 2-1 and Zeerip went 2-0, while Anthony Abro and Nicholas Barber each secured two wins in their respective weight classes.

EAGLES PLACE 21st AT MIDLANDS: The Green and White placed 21st overall the 52nd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships as the Eagles racked up 24 points, which marks the second-highest point total in EMU grappling history at the event. Eastern also had five members of its squad compete on day two of the tournament, which was a four person increase from just one season ago.

UP NEXT ON THE MATS: The Eagles will return to Ypsilanti, Mich. for their first dual at the Convocation Center Thursday, Jan. 15 when they take on Cleveland State in a mid-week match up. The dual is slated to start at 7 p.m.
