Wrestling Drops MAC Opener to UNI, 24-15

The Eagles earned three bout victories, including two pins
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad fell to the University of Northern Iowa in its first Mid-American Conference dual of the 2014-15 season Sunday, Jan. 4. The Eagles (5-3) were unable to overcome the powerful UNI squad, allowing the Panthers (4-3) to take the 24-15 victory.
After the Green and White forfeited the first bout of the dual at 125 lbs., redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto knotted the score at 6-6, pinning Leighton Gaul in 3:43 seconds in the 133 lb. match. Eastern took a 12-6 lead over the Panthers when Michael Shaw notched the Eagles second-straight pin of the afternoon, but Northern Iowa answered back with five-straight bout victories of its own to hold a 21-12 lead heading into the 197 lb. match.
Redshirt-junior Anthony Abro looked to light a spark for the Green and White, earning a 10-4 decision over Cody Krumwiede, but the Eagles would need a pin heading into the final bout of the afternoon to tie UNI in its first conference dual of the season.
Gage Hutchison was unable to keep pace with Blaize Cabell, notching just three points and allowing Cabell to secure the 9-3 decision, giving the Panthers a 24-15 victory over EMU.
The Eagles will stay on the road as they travel to Pennsylvania for two days of competition. The Green and White first takes on Clarion Saturday, Jan. 10 in a dual before heading to Pittsburgh for the annual Pitt Duals Sunday, Jan. 11.
