Redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto remains undefeated in conference bouts
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad fell in its third Mid-American Conference dual of the 2014-15 season to Kent State University, 25-9, Friday, Jan. 30.
The Eagles (7-8, 0-3 MAC) captured just three bouts, while the Golden Flashes (7-10, 3-2 MAC) grabbed seven victories, including three extra-point bouts.
KSU got out to the first lead of the match with a 6-4 decision at 125 lbs. before redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto fought back to take a 4-2 sudden victory at 133 lbs. over Mack McGuire. The win marks the second-straight season that Pizzuto has defeated McGuire in the 133 lb. weight class, knotting the score at 3-3, and remaining unblemished in conference bouts.
The Eagles were unable to pick up a win in the 141 lb. weight class with the Golden Flashes picking up an extra-point 9-1 major decision. The Green and White came within one of Kent State at 149 lbs. when Nicholas Barber nabbed a 10-4 decision over Nick DePalma.
EMU did not fair as well at 157 lbs. as Ian Miller rolled to a 19-4 technical fall to put Kent State up 12-6 at the halfway point in the match. KSU continued to build on its lead, taking a decision at 165 lbs. and its third extra-point match at 174 lbs. to go up 19-6 on the Eagles.
Despite the match being out of reach, redshirt-junior Anthony Abro picked up a win for Eastern at 197 lbs. with a 2-1 decision over Cole Baxter. Kent State grabbed the final bout of the night to take a 25-9 victor over the Green and White.
Eastern Michigan wrestling will stay the road for a second Mid-American Conference dual when it heads to DeKalb, Ill. to take on the Huskies of Northern Illinois University Friday, Feb. 6. First bout is slated for 7 p.m.
