EMU Wrestling Falls Short at NIU

The Eagles fell 21-12 to the Huskies of Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team was unable to secure a road victory as it fell to the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, 21-12, in a conference dual Friday, Feb. 6.
 
The Eagles (7-9, 0-4 MAC) earned four bout victories, while the Huskies (9-10, 1-4 MAC) grabbed six bouts with one extra-point victory.
 
Northern Illinois started off the match with a third period pin in the 125 lb. weight class from Derek Elmore before redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto brought EMU within three of the Huskies with an 8-7 decision at 133 lbs. The win marked the fourth of the season in conference action for the North Jackson, Ohio native, as he remains undefeated in Mid-American Conference action.
 
NIU extended its lead to 9-3 in the 141 lb. weight class when Tyler Argue grabbed a takedown in the final period to break the 1-1 tie and earn a 3-2 decision for the Huskies.  Heading into the fourth bout of the night the Eagles found a spark when Nicholas Barber nabbed a 7-2 decision and redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip followed it up with a 3-2 win to knot the dual at 9-9.
 
Northern Illinois grabbed it second lead of the night when Shaun'Qae McMurtry earned an 8-5 decision at 165 lbs. The Huskies extended their lead to 15-9 when Trace Engelkes nabbed an 11-10 decision with a final takedown with 25 seconds left in the bout over freshman Kayne MacCallum.  Northern Illinois earned its third-straight victory at 184 lbs. with a 7-4 decision from Quinton Rosser, taking an 18-9 lead with two bouts remaining.
 
With the bout knotted at 3-3 in the 197 lb. weight class, redshirt-junior Anthony Abro grabbed an escape with just four seconds left on the clock in double-overtime to force a third extra period. Shawn Scott of NIU grabbed an escape with 25 seconds left in the third overtime and notched the win with a takedown with just five seconds remaining to secure the dual victory for the Huskies.
 
Although the NIU had already earned the team victory, Gage Hutchison came out strong in the heavyweight division to grab one final win for Eastern with an 11-6 decision over Arthur Bunce.
 
The Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 8 when they return to Ypsilanti to go up against No. 2 Missouri in a 1 p.m. dual at the Convocation Center.
