Eagles will take on MAC opponents in Friday meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team will make the trip north to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. to take on Mid-American Conference foes Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University in a tri meet Friday, Jan. 30.
The Eagles have been having a terrific start to the 2014-15 campaign, as many returners have improved their marks from just a season ago while a fresh class of newcomers has also come onto the team and made an immediate impact. The Green and White is fresh off an appearance at the Notre Dame Invitational, Jan. 24, in which the athletes took on competitors from No. 23 Michigan State and No. 36 Notre Dame as well as No. 61 Indiana State and No. 68 Purdue. The Eagles, who scored 53.5 points in the meet, had a large group of athletes who performed well. In just her second meet as an Eagle, Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) finished second in the triple jump (12.33m/40-05.50) and third in the long jump (5.83m/19-01.25), which place her near the top of the MAC standings in both events. For her performance, Dreimane was honored as the MAC Field Athlete of the Week, Jan. 27.
Eastern also saw consistent efforts from pole vaulters Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) and Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont), who both cleared 4.00 meters/13 feet 1.50-inches to claim the top spots at the meet, while Uy went on to dip below the nine-second barrier in the 60m hurdles for the first time in her career, leading the Eagles in the event. On the track, the pair of Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) and Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) continued to write their names into the EMU record books with their sub-4:50.00 marks in the mile to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while McDermitt also recorded the sixth-best 3000m time in EMU history for a fourth-place finish.
The meet at CMU will start at 5:30 p.m. inside the Jack Skoog Indoor Track and Field Complex. The meet will be shorter in format, as it will not be run alongside the men's meet, which will instead be held prior to the women's competition at 3 p.m.
