SCOUTING OHIO: The Bobcats come into the Sunday dual with a 4-4 overall record and a 0-3 Mid-American Conference record after falling to Kent State University in its Friday night dual, Jan. 16. Ohio brings four ranked wrestlers to Ypsilanti, including No. 11 Cody Walters who will represent the Bobcats in the 174 lb. weight class. The redshirt-junior holds a team-best 21-1 record and has won 15-straight bouts for OU, while No. 9 Tywan Claxton is 19-2 on the season and 5-2 in dual action at 149 lbs. Eastern will also face off against No. 17 Phil Wellington at 197 lbs. and No. 20 Harrison Hightower at 165 lbs. Wellington is 15-5 overall on the season, while Hightower is 17-7. Ohio has three final grapplers in its starting 10 who have posted double-digit wins this season including: 133 lb. Kagan Squire, 157 lbs. Spartak Chino, and 184 lb. Andrew Romanchik.
ALL-TIME HISTORY WITH THE BOBCATS: Ohio holds the slight advantage in the all-time series as it posts a 6-2 record over the Eagles in the past eight seasons. EMU has struggled with the Bobcats, falling in its last two meetings. Last season, the Green and White fell in Athens, Ohio, 22-13, winning just four of the 10 bouts, while the Eagles' only returner who captured a win is redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto. Meanwhile, the Bobcats return four of its winning grapplers from just a season ago.
The Green and White last defeated Ohio, Dec. 4, 2011, when the Eagles took a 22-14 victory at Bowen Field House. Nick Whitenburg and Jared Germaine each earned wins for EMU as Whitenburg grabbed a major decision at 197 lbs. and Germaine clinched a decision at 125 lbs.
OUTSCORING OPPONENTS: Depsite its recent losses, the Eastern Michigan wrestling team is outscoring its opponents 238-215 on the season. The Eagles have used big wins over Bloomsburg, Cal Poly, and Clarion to outscore their opponents by 23 points through the first 12 duals of the season. The Green and White kept all three teams to just two wins in the dual and did not allow any of the three teams to reach double-digit scoring. Despite their three big wins, the Eagles have suffered some large setbacks of their own this season, falling 26-6 to then-No. 16 Northwestern in their first dual of the season. Most recently, the Eagles were on the wrong end of a 36-6 decision against No. 22 N.C. State and a 20-15 loss to Cleveland State in its first home dual of the season, Jan. 15.
EAGLES SUFFER TOUGH LOSS AT THE HANDS OF CSU: In a dual that came down to the final bout of the night, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team was unable to pull of the victory, falling to Cleveland State University, 20-15, Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Convocation Center.
EMU (7-5) captured four of the 10 bouts with one extra-point victory, while CSU (3-2) had six victories and back-to-back major decisions. Redshirt-junior Anthony Abro started the night in thrilling fashion capturing a last second takedown for the 4-3 decision before the Vikings took the next four bouts. The Eagles answered back with three-straight wins of their own, including a pin from redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip.
Redshirt-sophomore Devan Marry put control back into EMU's hands during a match in which he dominated Matt Donohoe to earn the 7-3 decision, but the Eagles were unable to hold on, falling in the final to bouts of the night.
ABRO CADABRO: Like last season, redshirt-junior Anthony Abro has been a magician on the mats in the 2014-15 season. Abro notched a perfect weekend for the Eagles, going 3-0 on the mats with two decisions and one pin. The Canton, Mich. native started off the weekend with a 9-5 decision over Ryan Darch of Clarion to extend the EMU lead to 31-7 over the Golden Eagles before coming up big for Eastern at the Pitt Duals Sunday, Jan. 11. With the score of the Duke dual knotted at 13-13, Abro continued to be a leader for the Green and White, stepping up and notching a narrow 3-2 decision over returning All-American and nationally-ranked Conner Hartmann that would allow EMU to take a 16-13 lead into the final bout of the dual.
In their second dual of the day, the Eagles struggled with N.C. State as the Wolfpack took nine of the 10 bouts. EMU's lone victory came from Abro who capped off a perfect weekend with a pin over Michael Boykin in the 197 lb. weight class. Abro posts a 16-7 overall record on the season, a 9-2 record in dual bouts and has earned two victories over ranked opponents in the 2014-15 season.
The redshirt-junior continued to be a leader on the mats for the Green and White securing his fifth-straight victory with a last second takedown on the edge of the mat against Cleveland State's Nick Corba. The 4-3 decision gave the Eagles the early lead in the match, but EMU was unable to hold off the Vikings, falling 20-15, Jan. 15.
UP NEXT ON THE MATS: The Eagles cap off their three-dual homestand Friday, Jan. 23 when they take on the Spartans of Michigan State University. The dual is slated to start at 7 p.m. For fans who are unable to make it out to the dual, the match will be broadcast on Eastern's live webstreaming service Eagle All-Access.
