MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– The No. 24 Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team improved upon its season-opening mark that gave the Eagles a national ranking, tallying a 194.575 in a tri-meet against Central Michigan University and Seattle Pacific University Saturday night, Jan. 17, at McGuirk Arena. The host Chippewas protected their home gym with a score of 195.875, EMU posted a 194.575, while Seattle Pacific finished third with its 187.250 team score.

Nerves that could appear with the first road meet of the season were kept in check by the Green and White as Eastern Michigan improved upon its team score in three of the four rotations. The floor exercise continued to be the Eagles' best rotation due to a 48.850 in the tri-meet. Scores of 48.675 on the uneven parallel bars and 48.575 on the balance beam, respectively, were also new season bests for EMU. Individually, the Eagles earned marks of 9.700 or higher on 16 of their 24 scores.

"I'm really pleased with how the group handled themselves on the road tonight," commented EMU Head Coach Jay Santos. "We faced a tough MAC opponent in a high energy environment tonight, and the girls really responded well on the road, hitting 24 for 24 routines.  We improved on three out of rour events from last week so I'm pretty excited to see that growth from our first meet.  We finished on vault and took a small dip on that event, so we need to make sure we finish meets stronger, but the overall performance is great to see."

Competing in all four events, senior Anna Willette won the all-around competition with a score of 39.000, becoming the 11th Eagle in program history to record an all-around mark of at least that total. The Pylesville, Md. native paced Eastern on vault with a 9.800 to tie for first in the event. She also put together a beam routine of 9.750 as well as a pair of 9.725 marks on bars and floor.

The Green and White started the meet on bars, recording a team score of 48.675 led by a new career-high from Kendall Valentin. The freshman Eagle earned a 9.825 from the judges to place third in the event. Fellow classmate Catie Conrad followed Valentin with a personal-best 9.750 to continue the great start to her collegiate career. Willette received a mark of 9.725, and senior Nikki Paterson's routine reached the 9.700 plateau. Sophomore Sydney McEachern tallied a new career high of 9.675, while Carrina Lo Bello notched the same mark to complete the first rotation. CMU's Kylie Fagan ended up claiming the crown on bars with a 9.875.

Next on beam, Lacey Rubin's new personal best of 9.750 and Willette's identical score tied for the top Eagles in the rotation lineup. Valentin's scores continued to rise with another career high of 9.725 for the event, while Lo Bello performed to a standard of 9.700 given by the judges. The Chippewas captured the top five spots, led by a tie for first between Caroline Fitzpatrick and Preslee Harrald at 9.825.

In the third rotation, Eastern Michigan saw not only its highest event score of the night (48.850), but also the best individual score of the night by an Eagle. Coming off a victory on floor against Temple, senior Chantelle Loehner led the Green and White once again by tallying a new career-high 9.875. The Cary, Ill. native tied for second in the exercise behind a 9.900 from Central's Hallee Moraw. Paulina Miller and Rachel Slocum finished in fourth as both Eagles earned 9.775, with Slocum recording her personal best for the second time in as many meets. Willette contributed with a new high floor routine as well with a 9.725, and Lo Bello added another 9.7000.

The Eagles finished the meet on vault where Willette capped off the first all-around performance of her collegiate career. She earned a 9.800 for her highest score of the night, tying with three Chippewas for first place. Miller and Valentin each earned vaults of 9.700 to find a spot in the top five, while freshman Julia Schwartz recorded a 9.650 in the first meet of her EMU career.

Coach Santos was pleased with not only the overall team performance, but several Eagles stood out in his mind as well. "We had several strong individual performances tonight; it was great to see Anna put up four strong events, tying for first on vault and winning the all-around.  Kendall hit a fantastic bar routine to tie for third, and Chantelle had a career high on floor with a 9.875 that finished a strong floor rotation."

Eastern Michigan returns to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center for its next meet. The Eagles will host their first Mid-American Conference dual of the season when No. 14 Bowling Green State University comes to town, Jan. 24. The matchup against the nationally-ranked Falcons is set to begin Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
