Eagles Sweep Northern Kentucky and Win the NKU Volleyball Invite

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team cruised to its first three-set win of the 2014 campaign Saturday evening, Sept. 6, over the host Northern Kentucky University Norse at the NKU Volleyball Invitational. The Eagles (4-2) swept NKU (5-1), handing the Norse its first loss of the 2014 season, 25-17, 25-20, 25-19, earning the tiebreaker to win their first tournament title of the season.
Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) was named the invitational's Most Valuabale Player, while Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) and Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) each earned all-tournament team honors.
The Eagles were led by Perinar and Crawshaw. Perinar posted a match-high 11 kills, while Crawshaw came in with 10 of her own. Crawshaw also hit a season-best .526, while Briner hit .462 with seven kills and 31 assists. As a team, EMU hit .269.
Defensively, Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich.-Saline) picked up a team-best 13 digs, while Perinar notched her fourth double-double of the season after recording 10 kills versus the Norse. In addition, the Eagles posted nine team blocks, including four block assists from both Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) and Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist). Along with her strong play at the net offensively, Crawshaw added three block assists to her day. The Eagles held NKU to just a .130 attack percentage, while not one member of the Norse's squad had double-digit kills.
The Green and White dominated the opening set, 25-17. The squad hit .314, receiving a four kill contribution from Perinar, while Jones, Krasowski and Melva Smith (South Holland, Ill.-Thornwood (South Suburban)) each contributed a pair. EMU held Northern Kentucky to a .136 attack percentage and put up four team blocks in the first frame.
The Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead after winning set two, 25-20. Crawshaw came out swinging, posting six kills in nine attempts, while Briner and Perinar each picked up five. Krasowski added three and Briner posted 12 of her 31 assists in the second frame.
Eastern continued its dominance in set three, taking the match with a 25-19 victory. The Eagles hit .237, while holding NKU to a .091 percentage. Krasowski led EMU in the frame with four kills, while Crawshaw, Perinar and Melva Smith each added a pair.
The Eagles open their home schedule Tuesday, Sept. 9, when they host IPFW at the Convocation Center. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. and fans can listen live on Eagle All-Access with subscriptions starting at just $6.95.
