Match Highlights.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team put together a dominating performance in its first home Mid-American Conference match of the season, sweeping Kent State University 27-25, 25-16, 25-17, on Saturday night, Sept. 28, at the Convocation Center. With the three-set win, the Eagles (9-6, 1-1 MAC) recorded their fifth sweep of the 2014 season while the Golden Flashes (8-7, 0-2 MAC) dropped its second straight MAC contest to start the conference slate.

Junior Stacey Perinar recorded another double-double with a team-high 14 kills as well as 10 digs. Katie Krasowski posted a double-digit mark in kills with 10, while Jill Briner and Kelsey Jones added seven of their own. Briner continued to do a strong job in her setter role with 31 assists throughout the three-set match. As a team, EMU hit at a .283 clip, while blocking seven KSU attacks. Eastern's defense held the Golden Flashes to only .025 and .171 attacking percentages in the final two sets. Corynne Smith led the Green and White with 21 digs in the match. Kelsey Bittinger grabbed a double-double with 13 digs and 12 kills to pace the visitors.

The match started with a kill from Crawshaw, and the Eagles quickly jumped out to a three-point lead, 5-2. The margin increased to four, 13-9, before the Golden Flashes started to rally. Trailing by two, 18-16, KSU rattled off three points in a row to take its first lead of the contest. However, Eastern answered back with a trio of points of its own to re-gain the advantage before another three points gave the lead right back to the Golden Flashes, 22-21. Facing set point at 24-22, EMU scored back-to-back rallies and continued to hold the momentum, tallying three of the next four points to capture the first set, 27-25.

Eastern shared the offensive load throughout the first set as Briner, Jones, Krasowski and Perinar recorded four kills apiece. Briner boasted an .800 attack percentage to go along with 15 assists. As a team, EMU hit at a .286 clip. The Golden Flashes were led by Bittinger in the first set as she racked up seven kills and Tinduke Adermi-Ibitola followed with five to help the visitors post a .306 attack percentage.

After capping off the comeback in the first game, the Eagles opened up a 9-5 lead in the second set. The difference blossomed to seven, 17-10, behind EMU's strong offensive attack at the front of the net. For the remainder of the set, Eastern grew the lead and did not look back to take a two-set advantage, 25-16.

Perinar posted a set-best five kills, while Briner and Krasowski each added three as well. Although the Eagles attacked at .270, the defense was the brightest spot in the set as the Green and White registered four blocks. Crawshaw and Krasowski each earned a pair of blocks, including a solo block from Krasowski. Moreover, Eastern limited the Golden Flashes to just a .025 attacking percentage.

Looking to avoid the sweep, Kent State began the third set with the first three points before doubling its lead to six, 10-4. However, EMU was not fazed by the deficit, claiming seven of the next eight tallies to knot the game at 11. The Eagles did not stop there as they took the lead for the first time in the set. After a kill, block and ace consecutively, Eastern forced KSU to take a timeout after falling behind, 16-12. Nonethless, the break in the action proved to be ineffective for the red hot EMU offense as the Eagles built an eight-point advantage to win the final set by a 25-17 mark. Perinar once again led the Eagles in kills with five in the third set as Eastern produced its best attacking percentage of the night at .293.

The Eagles will return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 30, as they hit the road to face Oakland University. The non-conference affair will be the first of three straight matches away from home for the Green and White. First serve from Athletics Center O'rena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
