Eastern Suffers 3-1 Setback to Central Michigan in MAC Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team began Mid-American Conference play Thursday, Sept. 25, when it traveled to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan University. The Eagles (8-6, 0-1 MAC) dropped the match, 1-3, as CMU (6-7, 1-0 MAC) won the opening two sets, 19-25, 17-25, before EMU picked up set three, 25-21, but Central came back to take the fourth and final set, 20-25.
On the offensive side, Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) was the go to hitter for the Eagles, recording 15 kills along with two aces, while Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) posted nine kills on 19 attempts with just three errors, while Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) notched six kills and 35 assists.
On the other side of the net, Crawshaw led the way with six blocks, five assists and one solo stuff. Melva Smith (South Holland, Ill.-Thornwood (South Suburban)) added four block assists and Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led the Green and White with 22 digs.
Perinar recorded four kills in the opening frame as the Eagles struggled on the offensive side, hitting just .139 in the first set. The Green and White saw a 19-25 set loss as CMU hit .273 in the frame. Crawshaw picked up three of her nine kills in the frame, while Briner added 12 assists.
Perinar again led EMU as the Eagles struggled to get the offense going in the 17-25 set lost, hitting just .057. Defensively, Corynne Smith posted a team-high seven digs, while Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich.-Saline) added six and Perinar posted four. The Chippewas continued their strong offensive play, hitting .278 in the set, leading to the eventual two set deficit for the Green and White.
It looked as though the Green and White was going to turn things around in set three as the Eagles came away with a 25-21 win, cutting the deficit in half. Perinar and Crawshaw came out swinging in set three, recording five and four kills, respectively. Eastern hit a strong .297 in the set, with Briner setting things up, notching 11 of her 35 assists in the set. The Eagles held CMU to a .135 attack percentage heading into set four.
Central came back swinging in the fourth frame, settling the match with a 20-25 set win, holding Eastern Michigan to a .029 hitting percentage. Perinar posted three kills, while Crawshaw and Melva Smith each added a pair. Corynne Smith added seven digs along with an ace.
EMU continues MAC play Saturday, Sept. 27, when it plays host to Kent State University. The Golden Flashes come to the Convocation Center for a 7 p.m. match in Ypsilanti.
