Barcelo Almoyna came away with wins in singles and doubles
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team closed out the 2014 Gopher Invitational Sunday, Sept. 21. It was the third-straight day of action for the Eagles at the University of Minnesota.
Sunday action saw the Eagles start in doubles play. In flight one, Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska dropped an 8-6 decision to South Dakota State's Tacy Haws-Lay and Ffion Davies, before defeating Stephanie Fox and Kate Lanier from Kentucky. Moving into flight four, Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero dropped their first match, 8-6, to Minnesota's Paula Rincon Otero and Julia Courter, but knocked off Northern Illinois' Mary Malkin and Emily Stefancic, 8-5. Flight nine saw Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna knock off Minnesota's Maja Vujic and Alexandra Bergman, 8-5.
Moving on to singles action, in the Gopher Flight Martinovska dropped a two-setter, 6-2, 6-4, to Wisconsin's Kelsey Grambeau, before taking down Chelsea Bailey in the 13 th place match. Meanwhile, in the Maroon Flight, Rincon Otero defeated Friedrichs, 6-2, 3-6, 10-4, in the ninth place match, while Ribero also fell in the 15 th place match, 6-2, 6-1 to SDSU's Davies. The last match of the day came in the Gold Flight. In the 11 th place match, Barcelo Almoyna knocked off NIU's Abigail Dekkinga, 6-3, 7-5.
The Eagles continue the 2014 fall season next week, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 26-28, at the Wildcat Invitational. The Green and White will travel to Northwestern University for tournament action in Evanston, Ill.
