Friedrichs and Barcelo Almoyna won their flight
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team began the 2014-15 season Friday, Sept. 19, at the 2014 Gopher Invitational. The tournament is a three-day invitational held by the University of Minnesota at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The day began with doubles action. Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska struggled in the Minnesota Flight, dropping a pair of matches by 8-7 scores, before topping Milwaukee's Christina Colarossi and Mardee Merar, 8-2, in the seventh place match for the flight.
Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero made a good showing in the Gold Flight, taking third. The duo topped Iowa State's doubles squad of Talisa Merchiers and Samantha Budai, 8-4, but ran into an 8-5 loss to the Wisconsin's duo of Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau. After the loss, Gogvadze and Ribero moved into the third place game, coming away with the 8-7 victory.
Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna proved to be the class of Friday's Minneapolis Flight, taking home the crown in three-straight matches. The duo cruised past San Diego State's Elif Gabb and Beatriz Souza, 8-1, before running by South Dakota's Nina Barudzic and Milica Pavlovic, 8-6. In the final match, Friedrichs and Barcelo Almoyna ran into a Mid-American Conference foe, Northern Illinois. The EMU duo paid no attention to the conference counterpart and walked away with the flight's title in an 8-5 match win.
Next, the Eagles head into singles play at the Baseline Tennis Center. Eastern struggled in singles action, coming away without a victory. Supejova dropped a two setter to Iowa's Morven McCulloch in the Minnesota Flight, while Martinovska and Gogvadze each dropped contests in the Gopher Flight. In the Maroon Flight, Friedrichs fell in straight sets, while Ribero met the same fate. Barcelo Almoyna was the only to compete in the Gold Flight and fell in a pair of sets.
"Not a great singles start for us today," remarked Head Tennis Coach Ryan Ray. "I thought our doubles play was decent. We mixed things up well. We have some development to do throughout the fall, but first we have two more days here to improve. I'm confident we will."
The Eagles continue play at the Gopher Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 20.
