Eagles Sweep UMBC at Maddie Bingham Memorial Tournament

9/12/2014 10:22:00 PM | Volleyball

Perinar and Crawshaw pace the Eagles with 11 kills apiece

CANTONSVILLE, Md. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team picked up its second-straight sweep of the week, taking down the UMBC Retrievers in three sets at the UMBC Maddie Bingham Memorial Tournament, Sept. 12.

With the win, EMU improves to 6-2 overall on the season, while UMBC falls to 4-4 overall.

Stacey Perinar and Megan Crawshaw led the Eagle offense, each tallying 11 kills, while Kelsey Jones added nine and Jill Briner had five for the Green and White.  Crawshaw went 11-for-20 with one swinging error for a .500 clip, as Jones hit at a team-high .600 (9-for-15), while Briner added 34 assists in the three set match. As a team, the Eagles used a season-best .304 hitting percentage to take the match in three sets.

On the defensive side of the ball, Corynne Smith tallied a team-best 23 digs, while Perinar notched nine and Alyssa Davis and Briner each added six.

The Eagles got out to a quick start in the opening set scoring five-straight points to take the 6-2 lead and forcing a Retriever timeout. The timeout could not stop the Green and White momentum as Jones and Perinar each found kills to extend the EMU lead to 8-2. UMBC had a short rally of their own coming within one, 10-9, but the Eagles did not allow the Retrievers to take the lead as they went on to a 25-16 victory in the first set.

Perinar paced the Eastern offense in the first set tallying seven of her 11 kills of the evening, while Crawshaw added five and Jones notched three.

With a one set lead, the Eagles continued to put the pressure on UMBC going up 2-0 with a 25-22 victory in the second set. The Green and White held the lead for the majority of the set before the Retrievers used three-straight points to knot the match at 20-20. The Eagles shut down the momentum taking their lead back for the remainder of the contest en route to a 2-0 lead. Crawshaw went 4-for-6 to lead EMU in the second set, while Katie Krasowski, Perinar, and Jones each notched two kills for the Green and White.

Eastern continued to be an offensive threat in the third set taking a quick 11-3 lead over UMBC and giving up just 16 points in the entire third set to the Retrievers, allowing the Eagles to take the 25-16 victory and its second-straight sweep of the week.  Jones paced the Green and White in the third and final set, tallying four kills on five attacks, while four EMU players added two attacks apiece. As a team, the Eagles hit a match-best .480 in the final set, making just one attack error in 25 attempts.

The Eagles will continue play at the UMBC Maddie Bingham Memorial Tournament Saturday, Sept. 13 when they take on Coppin State at noon.
