Eastern Sweeps Maddie Bingham Memorial with 3-0 Win Versus Coppin State

EMU has won four-straight with the victory
BALTIMORE, Md. (EMUEagles.com) – After an impressive showing in a 3-0 victory on Friday, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team continued its strong play Saturday, Sept. 13, with a 3-0 win versus Coppin State University. With the win, Eastern (7-2) completed the Maddie Bingham Memorial Tournament without dropping a set, including the 26-24, 25-22, 25-18, win versus CSU (4-5).
Eastern Michigan was led by Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) who notched 12 kills, while Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) hit an astounding .615 with nine kills. Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) added nine kills, while Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) averaged 11.3 assists per frame, in addition to her six kills.
Defensively, the Green and White totaled eight blocks and Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) posted 15 digs and Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Plainwell) added nine. Crawshaw led EMU at the net, notching one solo block and three block assists.
Perinar picked up six of her nine kills in the opening frame. As a team, Eastern hit .143 in the 26-24 set win. Briner, Crawshaw and Krasowski each added two kills, while Briner posted 10 assists. Smith netted nine of her 15 digs in the set, while the Green and White held Coppin State to just a .111 hitting percentage.
The EMU middle blockers were forces in the second set, 25-22 win for Eastern. Krasowski posted six kills, while Crawshaw notched a 5-for-7 attack. As a squad, EMU hit .256, including 12 assists from Briner. Defensively, the Green and White held CSU to a .206 hitting percentage, and stuffed Coppin State on four occasions.
Eastern Michigan closed out the match easily, 25-18. Briner added 12 assists in the set, while Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) and Krasowski each notched four kills and Briner pitched in with three. EMU hit .306, while Coppin State managed just a .206 average in the final set of the match as well. Despite five blocks by CSU, the Green and White managed to pull out the last set, giving them an easy six-straight in the 2014 Maddie Bingham Memorial Tournament title.
Eastern resumes the 2014 season on Thursday, Sept. 19, when the University of California-Irvine travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
