The Green and White trailed 2-0 before rattling off three-straight to take home the victory

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (EMUEagles.com) – After falling behind by two sets, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team mounted a comeback, taking three-straight frames to begin the 2014 campaign on a positive note Friday, Aug. 29. The Eagles (1-0) knocked off Marshall University at the 2014 Thunder Invitational, using a strong defensive effort as well as a balanced offensive attack to take home their first win of the young season in five sets (25-27, 29-31, 25-17, 25-14, 15-9).

Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) tied her career-high in kills after hitting .250 (14-6-32), while Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) hit .400 (6-0-15) and notched a match-high 41 assists. Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) led the Green and White in kills with 18. As a team, EMU posted a .164 attack percentage (55-27-171) en route to the 3-2 win.

Defensively, the Eagles recorded nine blocks, with three solo stuffs and 12 assists. Perinar rejected the Thundering Herd (0-1) twice on her own, while also notching a block assist. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) posted a team-best four block assists in the victory, while Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led the Eagles with 23 digs. Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich.-Saline) added 17 digs and Perinar posted 16 to complete the first double-double of 2014.

The Eagles dropped the opening frame, 25-27. Krasowski and Perinar paced the offense with four kills apiece as the EMU attack struggled. The Green and White notched just a .119 attack percentage, while Marshall was able to hit .220. Despite 22 digs, including nine from Smith alone, the Eagles saw the Thundering Herd walk away from the first set with a 1-0 advantage.

EMU again fell short in set two after a poor offensive performance. Although the Green and White was able to hold Marshall to a .104 hitting percentage, Eastern managed just an .021 attack percentage. Krasowski and Perinar again paced Eastern offensively, with three kills each, while Perinar's six digs topped the set for either team. In addition, Krasowski notched two service aces, but the Green and White fell, 29-31, heading into the locker room trailing by two sets at halftime.

The Eagles came out of the locker room swinging in set three. EMU cut the 2-0 deficit to one by taking the third set, 25-17. It was Perinar who shined in the frame, hitting .454 (6-1-11) with six kills in Eastern's first set win of the 2014 campaign. It was the offense that brought it home for the Green and White. As a team, the Eagles hit .357, with 15 kills throughout the frame.

EMU knotted things up in set four when it picked up a 25-14 victory. Eastern took advantage of a poor offensive showing by Marshall. The Green and White held the Thundering Herd to just a .065 attack percentage, while hitting .229 on the other side of the net. Krasowski hit .429 in the set, recording four kills on seven attempts with just one error in the frame.

The Eagles cruised to the victory in the final set, 15-9, holding Marshall to an .053 attack percentage. EMU on the other hand used a .400 attack percentage (3-1-5) from Perinar to lead the Green and White to its first win of the new season.

Eastern will close out the Thunder Invitational Saturday, Aug. 30, when it takes part in a doubleheader at the Cam Henderson Center. The Eagles will square off with the University of Virginia before taking on the University of Illinois-Chicago. EMU will see the Cavaliers at 1 p.m. and then hit the hardwood against the Flames at 5 p.m.
