EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team saw its seventh member compete at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Redshirt-junior Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) garnered First Team All-American honors in the triple jump after taking sixth in the nation.
The 2014 Mid-American Conference champion in both the triple jump and long jump, Scott edged his way into the ninth qualifying spot for the final jumps with a first flight-best of 15.91 meters/52 feet 2.50-inches. He was able to improve on his mark in his second attempt of the championship flight, going 15.99 meters/52 feet 5.50-inches to secure his sixth-place spot.
Florida's Marqus Dendy took the triple jump crown with an astounding initial jump of 17.05 meters/55 feet 11.25-inches, which gave him the confidence to pass on all his championship flight attempts and take the title by a margin of nearly two feet over Kansas State's Devin Field. Dendy finished the NCAA Championships as the national champion in both the triple jump and long jump.
Scott has had the most successful triple jump campaign in EMU history, claiming MAC Championship titles both indoor and outdoor as well as program records during both seasons. In the indoor campaign, Scott broke his own record with a jump of 15.85 meters/52 feet at the 2014 MAC Indoor Championships, March 1. He went on to break the outdoor record on two occasions, ending with a career-best mark of 16.34 meters/53 feet 7.75-inches at the Billy Hayes Invitational, May 3, which put him at the top spot in national rankings at the time. Eastern will enjoy the athletic prowess of Scott for one more year, as he will take on his senior campaign in the upcoming 2014-15 season.
After sending a decade-best seven athletes to compete at the NCAA Championships, the men's squad closes out its 2014 campaign. The team will return in the winter for the 2014-15 indoor campaign.
